Been a noticeable smell of petrol when getting in/out of the car for some time. Today after filling it up, I was using a heatgun to restore the plastic mouldings and decided the smell was bad enough to take a look. Fuel tank was damp on the right hand side, near the front. Seemed to be near where the fuel pump sits.
A quick search on you tube and I found out how to rip out the back seat so I could access the top of the fuel pump assembly. This is what I saw, after cleaning out all the fuel lying in the area and starting the engine.
There is a pinhole leak in the piping inside that raised section where the fuel lines connect (exactly the same fault as I had on my old poogo 206GTi).
So it is off to the wreckers in the next few days to source a new fuel pump assembly. Looks like swapping the top cover only would be quite a bit of work, given that all pipes are heat shrunk in place - replacement is possible, but not worth the hassle just to save a few $$.
Question: How many different models use the same fuel pump? I suspect any similar age volvo S60/S70/S80 would be the same. How about the corresponding V70 etc?
Any gotchas about fuel pump swaps I might have missed?
It's not too hard to remove the cover and inspect - at least it will be easier than on the pug that required a fuel tank drop to get to the pump. The fewer cars I need to check before getting the right part, the better though.
