So this arvo I did my first general service on my XC90 V8, replacing air, oil, fuel and cabin filter and thought I would share the details! MY2007 and 180000 on the clock
I did an order from FCP and picked up the filter wrench as well. I was pretty impressed with their shipping times. I ordered it on a Thursday and it was here the following Thursday and that included the long weekend here in Aus.
I used a mahle fuel filter, Mann cabin and Oil filter and a genuine volvo air filter.
So the cabin filter I pulled out looked like it hadn't been changed in the life of the car! It was black. and had numerous crusty insect remnants! Not sure what brand it was but the Mann filter I put in appeared much higher quality. for this job very handy to have a socket torx bit as if you had a screw driver the two screws at the back against the fire wall would be a PITA to get out.
The fuel filter was a ryco as well as the oil filter. the oil filter looked very black but had seemed to hold up alright. I've a feeling whoever put it in there over torqued it as it was quite tight to get started. Same with the sump plug. I've a feeling they reused the crush washer last time and the plug itself had what appeared to be old plumbers tape wrapped around the thread? The oil that came out looked pretty dark but the viscosity didn't seem too bad (car was quite warm). having the cap wrench is a must, and I could see evidence of where previous changes had been done without it (scratches around area etc) Also good idea to move the wiring that snakes around the filter housing before you drop the filter out!
Air filter that came out was a Hengst brand and it looked pretty dirty too. but in good shape none the less. Looked pretty much identical to the volvo one I put in to replace it.
I put in about 6.4 litres of Penrite HPR 5and it appeared to be about 3/4 between low and full on dipstick. haven't taken it for a proper drive yet just reversed and backed around out of the rear yard into the front.
I've got a engine mounts on the way as well as sub-frame inserts and a drive belt kit to do in the next few weeks as they are all due. I'm hoping that the small but brief whine on (very) cold start up is an idler or tensioner and not the power steering pump.
Still very happy with my car (or the Iced Vovo as the wife calls it) and if anyone is interested since October last year (When I put my first tank of fuel in it) the average fuel consumption is sitting at 11.2l/100km. that's probably a 60/40 highway/city mix.
Anyway if anyone has any questions or suggestions let me know. I apologise if I should have put this in another thread. Fell free to move it if that's the case!

One thing I did notice and continues to impress me about the engineering put into these vehicles is the Naca ducts on the plastic shroud underneath the car you remove to do the change. All there and designed for a specific purpose to grab cool air and create flow past the exhausts to help with cooling around the area and air flow.
Never seen these designed into a part like this before as I reckon sometimes this has to be lets build is as cheap as we can part! Mostly see them on the side windows of race cars to draw air into the cabin hoses.
