Hi All, The Cd player on my 97 S70 will not accept a disc? any idea what the issue would be?
Ex850R
Either have it fixed or go for single or double DIN aftermarket one installed properly or buy an external USB interface unit to plug into the cd stacker input on back of original unit.
Berry Motor Group have someone to repair but probably not worth it.

It's probably just cactus. Easiest thing is probably to swap the head unit with a working one.

I looked at photos online of what a 97 S70 CD player looks like but I'm getting different types of players come up. So...
Computer and home disc players mostly have a rubber belt that drives the tray in and out. I haven't seen many car CD players open actually, but I would imagine they do not use rubber belts - probably toothed gears. But those with a rubber belt, it stretches. You just replace it in that case.
If you mean it has a tray and isn't taking the disc physically into the dash, then it could be a microswitch or sensor that isn't being activated (can't 'see' the CD to know it's being inserted).
If you mean the CD spins but the display says something like "error" or "no disc" and/or it ejects the disc, then the lens of the laser could just need cleaning with isopropyl alcohol (chemist/BigW/etc) and a SOFT cloth (like flannelette sheets) - not something scratchy like a tissue. Have it wet, and wipe lightly, in one direction only, once. Then wait for the alcohol to evaporate. If it still looks dirty do it again with on a fresh spot of cloth.
Techs used to cut up a genuine chamois into small pieces for this purpose.
Another possibility is the 'sled' containing the laser often moves on chrome rod/s, and these become gunked up over time. So for example, it might play most of a CD that is full of music, but part way through (or with another CD that has more blank space) - the sled tries to move to a certain point where gunk is - which prevents it moving, so it rejects the disc.
The lasers become weak over time too. Sometimes you get an early warning of this, in that it will play some CDs but not others. Or some CDs seem to take a long time before beginning to play.

Mark, @iceton1975 at Berry's does get them fixed successfully, @asiandriver Will, has good units I believe.
Its common to fail at this age.
A Grom or Yatour plug in USB adaptor are great.
A used one may well fail quickly of course.

Cd wont go in at all......push it as far as it will go but it wont insert
familyman
Ok, sounds like you mean it's a thin-slot type with rubber rollers just inside the unit that pick up the CD and drag it inside.
If it's otherwise powering up ok, then it's just not 'sensing' you've inserted a CD - so isn't activating power to the rollers. Like I said, no experience with car CD units, but there should be a microswitch that is somehow activated by the rollers as you push the disc in. e.g. You begin to insert the CD, which might push the rollers apart and clicks a small switch which turns the rollers on for x seconds. Or as you push the CD in, it might move a lever that does the same. Or (far less likely) there might be a sensor. e.g. An infrared LED on one side that shines into a "receiver" on the other side - and as you insert the CD, it breaks the beam, which activates the rollers.
Either way most of this requires someone to take it apart, work out what activates the rollers, and test any switch/component right near that mechanism. It could be as obvious as a disconnected wire on a microswitch from years of road vibration.
It's hard to know what to try without it in front of me. But assuming it is powering on ok, first I'd try giving it several fast in-out pushes (of only a few mm) with the keys on, see if it takes it in. If not, MAYBE I'd then try and force it part-way in - about 1cm - with the keys off, then turn the keys on, see if it takes the CD in - and if not, leave it in that position - keys off again, push in another 1cm, keys on again - and so on until it's all the way in. Note: This is as long as it CAN be pushed in without feeling like it's going to break something. Use a CD you hate.
What I'm getting at is, it's possible the power 'went off' (somehow) before the CD was fully out. So the player might still thinks the CD is in a particular position that it obviously isn't. e.g. It might think the CD is halfway out, fully in, etc. So moving it in only a little at a time, you might stumble across the position the player thinks the CD is located - and it suddenly spits it out, or takes it in.
If it felt like I was going to break something at that step, I'd probably pull it out of the dash, remove the... hm... should be the unit's top plate I think, and find a way to fully insert the CD without any power connected, and without damaging anything as you push it in - and then apply power and turn it on. You might then be able to hit the eject button and 'reset' where it thinks the CD is.

Oh - and if it doesn't power up at all - obviously check the fuse first - but check it's other functions. e.g. If you could use the radio when a CD was fully inserted and it was working before - and the radio is still working now - that could be an indication it thinks the CD is already inserted. (It won't allow you to insert a second one, if it thinks one is already in there.) Which is why I suggested the last paragraph above.

Cheers....I will give it a go and thanks again

I have had this issue with one.
Another couple start skipping and stuttering, even with a good retail cd, I was lucky on one player that it read my burned cds which seems rare for old units like this.
It is made by Alpine so is of a reasonable quality.
BTW, the speakers are made by Dynaudio for Volvo. If you get hold of c70 premium speakers you get the full quality Dynaudio ones! Dynaudio a premo hifi stuff.

Will the radio out of a v70r or c70 fit straight into my s70 without any modifications? the unit with a 3 cd holder
Ex850R
I found I couldn't use the radio out of my V70R in my v70t5. Now the R had dolby with dash speaker and the extra amp and dolby processor unit. The t5 not.
In theory it should work?
Bear in mind the money on a used unit which will fail in the 3 disc unit faster than the single, but could be put toward a single or double DIN aftermarket unit. I had a full pioneer one in another S70T5, very neat.
I wouldn't bother fixing or fitting a used one myself.
brock
If your s70 has an amplifier the SC900/901 out of the V70R and C70 will work.
elvis35
amplifier should be under the front passenger seat ?..........None there.....So if i purchase a sc900 i will need the amplifier as well?
brock
Yes, the 900/901 don't have a built in amplifier.
Ex850R
Amp is under drivers seat if you have the Dolby surround unit, or maybe sort of behind the ashtray area on bracket.
elvis35
my unit is a sc816 so if i replace it with a sc900 would i put the amplifier under the front passenger seat? What is involved in the change over?
Ex850R
Am bolts under driver seat. Not under passenger..
Wiring should all be there for it as they allowed for every option in the harness in every car to save costs.
nickm
Replace it for like or change the whole setup.
Or there are aftermarket units that plug into the stacker port that will give you modern functions that negate the need for CDs
