egads https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/lilyfield/cars-vans-utes/good-condition-volvo-s40/1137873812 Has the cool/crazy interior fabric thing going on. 1.8k looks ok though.
Spac Cloth interior and lack of a 2.0/2.0T/T4 badge under the RHS taillight says it's a NA 1.8. Shame the gear lever is hidden, because that confirms NA vs Turbo. If anyone is seriously considering this, they should ring me about my silver manual 2.0 NA car, for about 1/3rd the price...
Spac Blue badge and airbag labels on the front seats say its later than 98, which removes my uncertainty about it being a 1.8 - its way more likely to be a 1.8 than anything else.

Those are the obvious ones at least.
Spac Don't forget the "Phase 1.5" cars. My silver T4 has the early dash, lumpy engine covers on a non-VVT motor, small indicators. MY00. Cueball (the race car) has the later dash, lumpy engine covers and small indicators (although they may have been changed - it's definitely had rear bumper swap prior to my ownership. I'm pretty sure it has an earlier compliance date than the T4 (noting that compliance dates are not a reliable way of dating a car).
