Hi guys, having trouble with my 1999 S80 T6. Walked out yesterday to start the car and I had trouble starting it. When it did start it was idling very rough, like it was running on 3 or 4 cylinders. After about 30 seconds to 1 minute it started idling a lot better but still not quite right, Not sure what is the problem is. No messages come up and no codes come up on the OBDII scanner. Went to Dubbo the other day, a 6 hr return drive and had to drive on some rough road and some unsealed road. Not sure if that would have anything to do with the problem. Help please guys........Thanks in advance.

Also every time I turn the engine off and restart it, it goes back to a very rough idle.

Flux capacitor is shot. Usual symptom unfortunately.

Lol, cracked or dying coil pack maybe? Codes from DICE/VIDA combo would be a decent start otherwise will need to do bit more legwork to diagnose.

Not sure about the T6 but the 5 cylinder engines can behave like this when head gasket is leaking. Small amounts of water leak back into the cylinder when engine is turned off. Car will start rough and run rough for a minute or two. :(

Plugs good?

Thinking I may have a problem with the idle sensor as once the idle comes up and runs normal (after about 2 mins of idle time) if I switch on the air con the idle starts playing up again...your thoughts please.... Plugs are good, drives good once idle is right. When I turn it off, then turn it on again it's back to the rough idle again until it picks back up....

Have you pulled the codes and checked the compression?
Start there.

There have been no messages on screen and no codes come up on the OBDII scanner. Once the car started idling ok I took it for a drive and it drove fine. When I pulled back up in the driveway put it in park and let it idle it was idling good until I turned the aircon on then it idled rough again for a while and came good again. Turned off the aircon and it still idled good. Then I switched it off then after about a minute I started the car and the problem started again for a minute or two and started idling ok again. It's got me beat if it's not the idle sensor. May have to take it in to Volvo mechanic. I definitely think the problem is electrical.

Have you cleaned your throttle body?
I have seen similar issues caused by a build up of oil film/carbon on the throttle plate.
Its quite common as the engines get older and the reason it gets better when warm is that the computer adjusts your fuel trim to compensate.

Thanks Tim, I will check that and let you know.

Ended up having to take car to Volvo mechanic and they diagnosed the problem as a Cam Angle sensor problem and they had to send away for the part. Wrong part was sent so car had to stay for another day then they ring me to let me know that it wasn't the Cam Angle sensor, and instead it was the Cam Timing sensor and the part was going to be $560 and I told them that I wasn't going to pay for the other parts and labour because they misdiagnosed the problem. After some arguing they decided to wipe the previous quote for parts and labour and only charge me for the new part and labour which they told me would come to $750 plus the use of a courtesy car for a total of 5 days at no charge. So lets hope when we go back on Monday that the part they have ordered is what solves the problem. Courtesy car is a 2017 Mazda 3. Nice little car.

Jeebuz!

Smells of get em in and empty the punters wallet....
Sure there isn't an independent shop there?
@Philia_Bear, the is this a common part failure?
I'm off to Rockauto website to check price....

Please, tell me it isn't this one.....

Sounds like they are ripping you off

You need to take back the lovelly little Mazda 3 and drive away your car and pay them nothing.
Advise them you have legal advice and will be contacting the MTA.

Not sure if that is the right part or not. My car is the 1999 S80 2,8L T6. It wouldn't surprise me if they are ripping me off. That's the reason I usually do my own work, hence the reason I took it in as I couldn't pinpoint the problem.

Yes it is the part, they are definitely ripping you off. Maybe keep the Mazda!
