Julian Hi guys, I know every man and his dog are after a 3" downpipe to suit the angle flange compressor housing, but add me to the list. I know they are available online but often seem to have asking prices of around $1K which is crazy to me. If anyone has one they want to part with or is making some I'm keen. Cheers
Mackay78 Most exhaust shops make them for 300 -400. Ive had 3 made . Angle or straight with lobster angle or bent with welds. Try a performance 4wd shop or any exhaust shop. Pay no more than 400. Good luck.
Julian Thanks mac, appreciate the advice. I've had an estimate of 1400-1500 for a full turbo back exhaust with dp made of sections of mandrel bent donut welded together. I'm thinking I might go ahead with it, and change my compressor housing to the angled flange while I'm doing it to future proof my dp a bit. Quick question, do you know if an adaptor is needed to go from a 7cm angle flange outlet to a 3" downpipe? Looks like online sellers sell them- but they're like $75 and don't look like something a machine shop couldn't machine for less than that.
Mackay78 Im not sure. Regarding your quote 1400-plus is 500 more than i have paid for full system. Performance pipes in Brisbane i got mine,900.
Julian Hmm, ok, maybe I should do some more phoning around. Always good to support a Newcastle shop but perhaps 1400 is over the top for what it is
Mackay78 No wonder people shop on the Internet. I too want too support local businesses though some prices are over the top. I have a 3' obx straight downpipe spare if you want too go that way ill sell for 50 plus postage. The benifits of changing too an angle flange on any tdo4 turbo is minimal. SOLD the pipe.
Julian Hmm, I already bought the housing but I may still be interested. Although I thought there were issues with the obx not clearing the steering equipment properly on the right hand drive cars or something? Since the dp seems to be the most expensive part of the exhaust it could save me a fair bit of cash to stay with the straight flange. So you reckon the impact of the straight vs angle flange is minimal compared to the benefits of the rest of the exhaust system upgrades? Cheers
Mackay78 Yes it does have issues clearing one part there. There is a dent put in the the pipe too clear that. Pic attached .
Slowbrick The angle flange most definitely flows more than the straight but I think the straight still supports 500whp. The difference for a road going car would most likely be minimal and you'd be best spending money elsewhere. That being said if you are going for that 500+ then put the angle flange on. The difference *from what ive been told* isnt as dramatic as going from the conical to straight which is quite significant. Give the guys at Best Mufflers in Carlton, Sydney a call. I bought some loose pieces from them to piece together a downpipe for a 245 and found they were very knowledgeable and the prices were quite reasonable. I used to recommend Liverpool Exhaust but they arent what they used to be and unless its a common car like an S-chassis, Skyline or LS then they arent really interested. I'm also in Newcastle and havent yet found a good exhaust shop, not that ive looked. I did speak to the guys in Bennetts Green who gave me a reasonable quote of ~$400 for the 245 downpipe in 2.5 inch with a V-band.
1971_144GL Jules, do you mean the part that looks like the one in the bottom of this picture with the bellows style arrangement? Mine is from a 98 V70 2.5t that I dismantled, and I think i still have it in the pile.
Julian Hey guys, looks like I'll now be getting a downpipe made as part of a turbo back exhaust. I have got a quote for 3" turbo back mandrel bent which I'm pretty happy with. I will be putting a new turbo and compressor housing on before getting it made. And no @Russell I didn't check it out but have seen stuff there at the bar beach bowl before. What skate shop are you at? I bought my last board from the shop next to that "good brother" cafe place but am more into surfing than skating
