Phoenix wroteOur mechanic stated $6000 for a reconditioned transmission + $1000 for labour on this SUV but was wondering if that's too high for a reconditioned transmission.
We have already spent $6000 on a replacement 60,000KM engine in this car earlier this year and it has always made that rattling/clunking sound on reverse until the day the transmission finally gave up. One or both of the turbos also make this windy sound on acceleration. Do you think someone is giving me a ride for my money?
Well...
Number 1
Good second hand T6 motor is $2k and install is $2k so you paid $2k to much on the motor...
Why did it need replacing? failed timing belt?
Turbo's are supposed to make wooshing sounds when they work... its a matter of which wooshing sound they are making to know if they are good or not
The trans if making clunking sounds in reverse... points to something like engine mounts in combination with a drive shaft... I've not ever heard a single one of the 4 speed GM tran's make a ratling/clunking sound that was not external to the trans
I would suspect it was a failed drive shaft and the guy is taking you for a massive ride
Do NOT put another trans into a T6 unless it is refurbished with the upgraded solenoids/clutch packs/valve body
a second hand trans is worthless in these cars
Even then... paying $2k too much for the job... if not $2500 too much, should be $2k for the trans and $1500 in labor
