There are some 15" steelies to fit my 79 244, they look nice in the pics, but was hoping to get some opinions on whether, at the size listed below they would fill out the wheel arches a bit more or if I'd need spacers? I was hoping for a bolt on solution, but to add a bit better stance. Car is lowered a bit.
Any suggestions on tyre size to look good but still be above board?
Thanks,

Assuming you have standard 5.5 inch +20 wheels fitted.
The 6's will sit 14mm further out on the inside and 26mm further out on the outside.
The 7's will sit exactly the same on the inside and approx 40mm further out on the outside.
The 8's will sit approx 12mm further inwards on the inside and 52mm further out out the outside.
Luke
Thanks Rob, that's exactly what I need. Tyre suggestions? How wide do you suggest?
GingerNinja
I wouldn't bother with the 6" wide wheels. I'd go with tyres in the 205 to 225 range but it depends on the wheels you get.
Luke
So 7" front 8" back should fit?
Rob
Luke;84265 wroteSo 7" front 8" back should fit?
Should.
Likely you will get some rubbing on the outside rear so you will probably need to do a bit of guard lip cutting/rolling.
and go easy on tyre sizes. You dont want them too big
Luke
Thanks Rob. I'm not in the zone for body work, so if 7" at the rear would fill out the factory arches I'd be happy. Could you recommend a tyre width to suit?
Thanks again
GingerNinja
I rolled the guards on my wagon with a big sledge hammer. It took a while to get right but you can't tell from the outside. Worth the effort for a bit more tyre and wheel clearance.
Rob
agree, have done it several times. not a difficult task.
Luke
Is there a thread you can point me to that explains the process? Cheers,
Anthony
Hmm, I dont know the seller, but buy with real caution.
Typically you want no wider than 7", dont mix with 8" unless you really know what yr doing.
15" dia is a bit out of date?
Option is there are Volvo alloys in say 16x7 with 20mm offset and you know they fit first go.
Mild steel rims that have been widened are pretty much banned in motorsport as they shear on the flange - and I have seen this myself on a former Volvo team Swedishbricks 244 in Sydney.

Agree 100%.
While 8's
should fit. I would definitely avoid going any bigger than a 7 if you are not confident rolling guards and the like.
Luke
I've had a bit of a read up on rolling the lip on the rear. Would be happy to give it a crack I reckon. rear passenger guard has a little ding anyway.
15s out of date?! I like the look of a bit more tyre. Plus I really want steelies. The seller has advised that they're all road legal in aus. They're from BCI in Geelong North.
Luke
Anthony
doesn't CI mean China, plus the star of China is above (in blue not red).
From the pic you can see where it has potential to shear, just outside of the lugnuts after the curved fold. Remember these are wide rims not the 5-5.1/2-6" rims that Volvo does as max width of steel.
Difference is an alloy rim has 5 to 10 radial spokes that support from centre to outside of rim and the metal around the lugnuts flange is very thick say 10mm VS say 2.5 mm all-over of formed/pressed/rolled/welded mild steel sheet.
Maybe seek someone from the this list in Melbourne who has a 244/240 to check them out and actually trial fit one front and rear - to check it clears brakes, struts, guards, & has near perfect concentricity etc. Best if a tyre was on the rim though.
OR - as your super keen, buy one and fit a (used) tyre, trial fit and if everything checks out, buy the rest.
Then get back to the list with your experiences.

Brake cooling looks like it may be an issue.
Luke
They're DOT approved. Do you think brake cooling would be an issue day to day driving? It's not a car getting pushed hard.
Vee_Que
Honestly, 8" will clear given how much the rims sit inside on a 240 rear, 225/60 rear and 205/60 on the front with a 7" rim is the perfect size for handling, bigger will cause squeeling on corners, and rubbing.

Luke;84379 wrote Do you think brake cooling would be an issue day to day driving? I
Yes. Absolutely. If you doubt this, look how many daily drivers have Centerline-type wheels and who aren't replacing rotors and pads on a regular basis &/or aren't having problems with fade using regular road pads.
You don't have to push a car very hard in Australia to cook the brakes, given the range of gradients, the high average ambient temperatures and the very low quality of drivers. You need good brakes to avoid hitting these morons when they pull out in front of you, or when they decide to synchronize the activation of the indicator signal to the brake lights immediately prior to an imminent right turn. Especially at the bottom of a hill.

There is a member of the iroll facebook group who will be fitting a set of these in 8" to the rear of his 240 on the weekend ill post some pics here for you
