Ramrodfunk My 1993 240 wagon wouldn't start this morning . After cranking it for a minute or so and putting the accelerator pedal to the floor it started, blew a lot of smoke, idled for about five or so minutes and died. I noticed a lot of fuel coming out of the exhaust ,unburnt, and it smelled rich while it was running . When I rolled the car down the driveway there was a small pool of fuel. I reckon the patch would correspond to be being somewhere between the front seats but under the car, of course. I have recently replaced the fuel pump relay and the fuel pressure regulator. I didn't have time to get under the car this morning to have a closer look. Any ideas? PLEASE HELP. Cheers in advance
user48736353002 is the check engine light on? If so read the codes. See if it starts any easier with the air flow meter unplugged. edit: Apologies, I somehow missed the part about there being a small pool of fuel.
lasercowboy The only bit of the fuel system that's in the region you describe is the main fuel line that runs from the main (external) pump to the engine bay. These lines do get brittle over time, and the added pressure of your shiny new pump may have been too much for it. Also possible that the failure was further forward and fuel dribbled back along the outside of the line. 240s always seem to smell like they're running rich to me - is this specifically new? Was it running lean before? Try priming the pump (ignition to 2nd position) and seeing if fuel is dripping/oozing/squirting from anywhere on the main fuel line under the car. Obviously be very careful, do NOT get under the car, and if you're unsure, take it to a mechanic instead!
Angus242164 The only way to locate the source of the leak is to look for it. There aren't any common causes of fuel leaks on 240's.

Ramrodfunk Thanks everyone. Today I cleaned the spark plugs, cleaned the mass flow thingy, changed the fuel pressure regulator back to the original one and not much has changed.. The leaking fuel appears to be dodgy exhaust joints. Its just flooding uncontrollably. I unplugged the fuel pump relay and it started but wouldn't run. Any Ideas
Angus242164 It sounds like you could have an injector that's stuck open, and spraying max fuel into a cylinder. You could also have a blocked return line from the regulator to the tank, which would raise the pressure in the rail to much higher than is required, making all the injectors spray too much fuel. I have seen old GM vehicles where the injector driver transistors in the ECU have failed, and given the injectors a constant earth, making them stay open and inject massive amounts of fuel. I've never seen this on a Volvo before however.
Ramrodfunk Thanks Angus. I'll check the injectors tomorrow. When I changed the fuel pressure regulator back to the original, i had only changed it as a precaution, I did notice that the return line was bone dry and did not smell of petrol which I thought was strange. Is it possible that the vacuum hose from the fpr is not working preventing the over-supply of petrol form entering the return line? I have also read that the coolant temperature sensor may be effecting the fuel supply also. I have a new sensor that I had bought for another car so I might fit that also but it looks like a painful job. Cheers
