Hi all, I have a couple of projects in the pipeline, and thought there might be a different way of doing them that would be of help of others. There are lots of experienced people here, but also lots of others who have never built an older engine or gearbox.
The upcoming projects I have are:
Assembly of a machined/reconditioned B20
Reassemble an M41 with cold hardened gear set and new bearings.
My thought is, what if I turned one or both of these into a weekend workshop for a small number of people who have not done this before. We could dismantle a used system and talk about what to look for, and then do a reassembly. I would ask a modest fee to cover costs/ make enough profit for beer money. Travel to Tas in winter is very cheep - flights as low as $40. The ferry is also low cost in winter, so perhaps you can bring your own lump of Swedish iron to look at/demonstrate with. With a little know how it is possible to do a very good home rebuild, particularly when the value of the cars makes it can make it difficult to justify an outsourced build.
Let me know if there is any interest, and I will look into setting something up.

I'd be interested for sure.

If you do, you should have one person document with photos.

Cool, sounds like you have found locally what I am thinking of offering here. Building an engine is one of those things that is much harder without having seen it done first, and I hope I can give others the confidence to keep their treasure/scrap metal going a bit longer. I look forward to seeing how your build goes, there are lots of good options. If you want the contact details for a grumpy by awesome Volvo engine builder in Canberra let me know. He builds v8 supercar engines, but started in Volvo as a kid, and has had long running interest in fast b20. The 140 race car recently on the volvo club vic was by him, and there would not be many volvo engines in the world with better performance specs, and durability. But this sort of thing costs around 20k to achieve. As usual it all comes down to budget.
Sounds like there are two interested so far.

Ian Stewart. I had the pleasure of building a 1960's rolls royce V8 with him over several months when he as working on a project with me - hope I can remember 10% of what I learnt. He has lots of hours invested in 1 series volvo's. I don't think he accepts walk in customers any more.

I'd be keen.
