The auto box in my 1992 240 is almost dead. It has had a problem for the past few months where reverse would intermittently not engage until I built the revs up a bit and then there'd be a clunk and I'd start moving. 1st is now affected too - there's no clunk but it just doesn't seem to let any power through, I have to floor it to move off and even then it's pretty slow.
Once I'm going the car drives normally but it's clear the box won't last much longer.
One option of course is just to throw another auto box in, not sure how complex this is but surely it's the easiest option.
My preferred option is to get a manual in there (for obvious reasons), but I simply do not have the skills, tools etc to do this. I'm not worried about getting parts (donor car would be the go I think, and I know I'd need an LH 2.4 flywheel) but I'm wondering if anyone either wouldbe happy to do the conversion, or knows someone who would?
I'm in Canberra so someone someone sort of near me would be ideal.
Just trying to figure out where to go from here really, so I still have a car to drive!

manual swap! manual swap!!

You know I'm happy to help, but I've got no time.
I can't recall what's involved in pedal/hydraulics swap, but the rest of it should be easily nailed in a day if you have the correct parts to go in.
240
Yep, I understand the time dilemma.
Yeah the pedal/hydraulics is what worries me, although to be honest I just don't have enough knowledge to be able to do it. As an example, I have no idea what the spigot bearing is, just that it exists - I just don't think I'd do it right.
Putting another auto in is only really a last resort, but I may just have to do that if I can't manage to find someone to do the work... (I do know someone who's a mechanic, I'll talk to him about it tomorrow.)
The other question is - if I do go manual - M46 or M47? I know what the difference is between the two. I'd prefer a true 5 speed box but the M46's are far more common, it it worth seeking an M47 to avoid potential OD issues?
Spac
Spigot bearing goes into the end of the crank or the flywheel (depending on the car), and then the gearbox input shaft slides into it. It supports the input shaft.
Vee_Que
M47 would be better. But James has a good aw72l he just removed if you need it.
240
AW72L is the best of the AW's presumably?
As of today, the car is almost undriveable, it's impossible to do a hill start without holding up traffic as 0-60km/h takes north of 30 seconds.
The problem seems to be that no power gets through - the engine won't rev past 2000 rpm until I'm faster than about 60. It'd be too hopeful to think that there's anything I can do as a temporary fix to the current gearbox, right?
The point is that I need to be able to sort something out fairly soon, I can wait a couple of weeks and borrow someone's car but I can't put it off for too long. So any tips will be appreciated!

Update - I rang Total Traction in Belconnen and the guy there was all too happy to help out, but I will need to source an LH2.4 flywheel and ideally an M47 as well.
Does anyone have either of them?
Vee_Que
Yep, auto is dead.
if you get an m47, you will need the matching tailshaft also.
berrys in melborune should have all the parts needed to suit a conversion.
240
Getting the stuff from Melbourne to Canberra could be a bit costly unless someone on here happens to be making the run in the near future...
Vee_Que
Probably about $100 in courier costs, but worth it for getting all the parts required!
240
Well the only parts I need are an M47 and LH 2.4 flywheel... how much are they worth?
(Edit: and probably an M47 tailshaft and new clutch too.)
Anthony
LH2.4 flywheel - Have an excellent unit
Without all the parts a shop will only get so far also. People forget a tailshaft is also required - (well the front half section anyway that suits the gearbox chosen), but a complete unit guarantees a better balance maybe.
Since time is the essence I would get a 2nd hand auto gearbox and be done for the moment. This will cost a bit anyway.
Over time, gradually collect all the parts, and develop skills needed for a manual conversion, or find a donor car.
Vee_Que
You're missing the clutch pipe line, pedal box, different gearbox cross member potentially, otherwise not much else. Shifter surround boot and clamps.
Anthony
Exhaust system needs to be undone (moved out of the way) and this is an added labour cost - plus a new gasket and broken/damaged nuts/studs to replace,
obtain master cylinder, slave cyl, pipe and hose and little bracket to slave cyl, gearbox rubber mount etc etc.
When gearbox is out - replace rear engine seal etc, replace tailshaft uni joints, inspect/replace tailshaft centre donut, new seal on gearbox to bell housing, new clutch fork and pivot bearing, potentially replace shifter nylon bushes and top seal, circlip etc etc.
A full list would fill more than half a page

I would be counting on a donor car for things other than M47 and associated bits etc, and new parts like a clutch.
How involved is putting in a 2nd hand auto box as a temporary solution, something I could do myself or better to get a shop to do?
Vee_Que
I would not suggest to change unis if they are not worn, and show no wear for instance.
Bushes on shifter, id agree on. The m46 tail may be able to be cut to suit the m47 but I'm not sure of the length differences as I usually deal in putting in t5 manual boxes into turbo cars.

So here's where I'm at now.
Labour to just swap another auto in would probably be around $600 according to a quote I got today (that includes the ATF). If I was spending that much I'd want a decent unit, probably reconditioned, in there which I suspect would cost quite a lot. Particularly considering I don't even want an automatic.
On the other hand, labour plus an LH 2.4 flywheel plus clutch and other new parts for a manual conversion will rapidly add up to well over $1000, probably closer to 2k.
It's a good car so in the long run it is probably worth it I suppose. Thoughts? Is this too much to spend on a 240?
Also unless someone here has one, I'm struggling to find an M47 so may have to settle for M46. Not ideal but way better than auto.
How much of a gamble is it putting in an M46 straight out of a driving car, ie one that isn't reconditioned - they're fairly dependable aren't they?
egads
Does @slowbrick still have his full m45 conversion kit? That + @Anthony sourced flywheel with TTS doing the work could be done pretty quick. If you get super organised I could maybe even pick it up and bring it to Canberra on my way past
