My 142 has non-retractable seat belts and they are a little frayed. What they frayed of, I don't know [followed by raucous laughter].
Anyhoo, does anyone know if later model 240 series [or similar] retractables will fit in a 142?
I got a quote from a guy in Sydney to replace them and he told me $375 each. Seemed a little extreme.
Any help out there. Cheers

What age is your 140? I seem to recall that Volvo changed the body sometime (1972 or before), to neatly accommodate retractable front seat belts. If my memory isn't telling me nonsense, then it would be nearly impossible to fit 240 belts into an older 140.
And don't forget that 240 belts clip into 240 centre console, so you'd have to make the work somehow, too.
Buy generic aftermarket belts off ebay or your local parts place. The mounting holes are a universal 7/16" UNF thread, so there's no drama there.

Thanks for the reply. It's a 1971 model. And yeah, I forgot about the center console thingie in the 240's. I'll try for after market ones. Cheers.

A couple of things to consider.
1. The base of the B pillar. as @Spac has mentioned they changed the design to allow the big retractors to fit inside the base of the B pillar, this happened in about 1970. My 162 has a 70 rear section and has these holes. If you had a body without them it would be possible to cut them out but would probably be quite a job. 164 and 240 belts will fit.
2. The centre buckle. If you used 164 belts (pre 1975) you could use the centre latch to match, this does not require a centre console. if you use 240 belts you would need to do something in the middle to accommodate the latches.
3. The perfect solution is to use late 240 seatbelts fitted with 164 buckles and centre latch. Unfortunately the stitching would need to be undone and resewn to do this and touching stitching on seatbelts is absolutely illegal. the only other solution is if you can find bolt in aftermarket belts that have a small enough mount to allow it to slip through the 164 buckles without modification. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any that work.
4. Rears are easy, you can fit 240 retractables there, the top ancor sits in a slighlty different spot and hinders the retracting action a little but it is ok, you can run 240 covers if you wish or leave the retractors exposed, I have done this to my 164.

There was 2 belt styles fitted in 73 to 75. Flappy spring front belt buckles and a fixed buckle unit on the floor with black plastic cover and red buttons. The latter is tidier and I had installed this in my 74 145 that I used to own. Retractable rear belts in Australia came much later than in Sweden, but the mountings were included in my 74 144.

Pic of the fixed unit I was referring to.
