Volvirgin
Hello all. Some time lurker, First time poster.
We (Mrs Volvirgin and I) are looking for a car. We have more or less settled on a V50. I love the idea of a T5, but just a little more than we are looking to spend. As the name indicates, this will be our first Volvo, so looking for some advice on what to look at or avoid.
The most likely candidates seem to be a 2004-08 V50 2.4 Auto. Have read so far to ensure ATF has been changed and possibly software updated - are there any pitfalls to avoid with these things?

If you are a city dweller I would highly recommend the 2.4i over the t5
Less issues and less stuff to break and everything just lasts longer
The manual versions are more reliable than the auto versions
That Said
The issues are the pcv system and front struts
And the coolant overflow bottle
And the fuel pressure sensor on the rail
And the amm
And the sway bar end links
They just all fail prematurely
They are all dirt cheap parts that are easy to replace though
Anything you buy plan to immediately spend $2k in maintenance on and you should be set
Just wondering what your budget is?
If you don't mind looking hard it's easy enough to find a good 2.4i v50 for sub $7k in amazing
Volvirgin
Budget up to $10k. Have been looking on carsales as a start and seen some at around $7.5k so figured that was around our mark.
Obviously would prefer low ks, but do high ks bother these if they have been maintained properly?

P1 V50 is a good car... don't expect it to give you any more grief than any other 10 year old car.
nice, fun car to drive too, even in NA auto form.

I can concur with the above after driving on of these beauts for almost 9 years (hence the username)
Had a few issues during that time but mostly wear and tear as all cars have
Just wondering what "amm" is but ?
Ex850R
Air Mass Meter or MAF
v50nut
thanks for the info Snoopy
I replaced the MAF myself previously due a check engine light issue I thought I could fix
but the check engine light stayed on anyways
I got a new FPS recently off the web thinking thats where the problem is but am too chicken
to replace after watching the youtube video (oil changes I can do but muching around with the rail is bad !)
Car is idling poorly and power is not what it was - hopefully not the fuel pump
as Im due to get the timing belt done soon (along with finally replacing the FPS)
cheers

split diaphram in pcv system?
Philia_Bear
Must reset adaption every time your replace stuff
Must use Vida to do it
Spac
Given time, would it come back by itself?
Philia_Bear
Frequently not
It gets into a bad loop and refuses to come out
v50nut
so you reckon I should bring to a volvo specialist and have them reset/check using Vida ?
I'm worried about spending big at a Volvo specialist
on a car thats now 10 years old/180000k on the clock and its time for the cam belt change, cabin filter service, and fix the check engine issue
then again. what 10 year old car doesn't need a chunk of change thrown at it ?
cheers

Buy dice on ebay for $150 and never bother with a Volvo specialist again

are there any Ebay sellers that are recommended to buy Vida Dice through?
I have asked a tech friend of mine for a Win 7 Pro laptop. Is it difficult to set up the software? any traps for new players?
As most tech stuff has gotten easier and I've been a basic only mac user for 8 years, I feel i'm getting stupider on this front.

.net 4.5
Do not install anything above 4.5
sucksqueezebangblow
Sorry is that to do with the win 7 pro version or the Vida version.
Thanks!!

Winblows
You have to make sure not to enable auto updates in Windows and be carefull about what updates you install

Awesome tips thanks.
Sorry for not knowing all this yet, I've been reading hours worth of p1 platform stuff, engine stuff but haven't got into Vida dice yet until today when I was offered a laptop.

or use VMware. Reliably runs VIDA on an older laptop so I can have one stowed permanently in the XC. Dice works
Use it with Windows 7 home 2GB ram on freebee old laptop (slow but works) or windows 10 8 GB ram :)
