Guys. I have 2 1989 240 gl wagons. (Teenage sons). Both have a major suspension rattle in the rear. I read that its likely the large trailing arm bush. I had the smaller ones replaced. I understand that there is a special tool needed to remove the bigger one. I even saw the home made one. Does anybody in Sydney have one and/ or able to change them for me. I will happily help.

I keep meaning to make one, but haven't yet :|

Yes And yes
But not until Jan

Hi Mike. Do you have time in th next month or so. Also, can you advise the parts I need to order? Regards Arthur

I am resurrecting this thread to discuss trailing arm bushing tool.

I am trying to work out how to make one of these using parts in Australia. Bunnings et al are hopeless when it comes to large fittings like those used in this guide, and I don't really want to buy NPT fittings from the US as the shipping cost is expensive.
I have a lathe, so if I could get some 50mm bar stock in brass or steel, I'd be able to manufacture the needed parts, but unfortunately I don't know where I can get bar stock for reasonable prices. On eBay it's expensive and no one in Australia seems to be selling 50mm bar stock.
Thoughts?

Hi James. I have a few plumber mates - and a few plumbing supply shops near me. I will check them ut over the next few days and let you know how I go. Regards

I reckon if you can get about 100mm of 50mm pipe (steel or brass should do, aluminium probably too soft), and something to cap it, I can sort the rest out and machine the bits as needed.

I can get anything you want from the place around the corner from me in aluminum or Mild Steel
I can get 4140 from other places if you want to kill something
jamesinc
50mm diameter mild steel then, 10cm bar should do, and some 50mm tube to use as the brace on the outside of the bush.
If it's solid bar, I can hollow it out on the lathe, but it will take ages. If it's tube, that's less hassle as we can just weld a cap to one end, drill a hole through it, and hey presto, bushing receiver cup, but I would still need a small amount of bar stock to use as the plunger to push the bushing out.
Philia_Bear
how thick you want the tube? 10mm ok?
Philia_Bear
I will pick up on sat
Philia_Bear
I wonder if we can use Aluminum on the tube as its compression?
jamesinc
10mm seems pretty thick. 3-5mm would be fine if it's steel.
As long as the ID is enough to slide the bushing with it's metal casing through. I'm not sure if you have such a bushing lying around/can measure, but we should probably do that first.

I've got the spare axle sitting out of the car that we can easily mess with
jamesinc
Awesome. I probably won't have time this weekend though. I may be away the following weekend also! So it may not be until beginning of July that I can spend some time over there sorting it out.

If you dont have access to the tool, you can burn the rubber out and then cut the shell out with a reciprosaw (or even a hacksaw).
Urethane will be easier to re-fit than the original rubber and metal shell design but you'll get longer service life out of the oem style rubber bush in this location.

I've got a tool for this job packed away somewhere...
jamesinc
I am fitting SuperPro urethane bushings, so I'll have to retain the shell. Not keen on burning the rubber out with the fuel tank right there.

Gentlemen. I need to reinvigorate this quest. The rattles in our two 89 240 wagans are now unbearable. Anyone in Sydney with the special tool and/ or able to help replace the trailing arm bushes?
