As per the title, m46 came from factory with type F ATF, however according to volvo and the internet, full synth 10W30 is good for warm climates, especially in older boxes. It's proving to be extremely difficult however to find full synth in this grade, so my question is should I run full synth 5W30 or 10W40, semi synth 10W30 or go for ATF instead?

I would only run full syn motor oil in a box that doesnt have a working OD. The issue with motor oil , especially synthetic oil, is that it has friction modifiers in it which will make the OD in an M46 unhappy. Just run the Type F and change it every 30k. It will be a happy box and shift nice for years to come.

Agree... run type F and change frequently

Looked up an old record and used Mobil or equivalent GM Dexron II auto trans. oil 2.3 litres. Don't have the container for other info though.

IIRC Dexron shortens the life of the overdrive on these.
I just use Type F, but I've heard good things about Redline MTL...

neat, type F it is then
