Fred the Fucking Fiesta

So I bought a Jeep Fiesta. I remember lusting after the ST/XR4 in the early/mid 2000s and never thought I'd own one, especially after having a Swift Sport (great little car). But after some questions on facebook (and ignoring some of the more militant opinions), reading lots of reviews and checking out what would fit the budget, it seemed a good fit. It really only has to do for me a year or so while the business gets going, but I have my eye on using it for hill climbs.

It's not the 2.0l XR4 unfortunately, it's the middle model 'Zetec' – 2005 WP – with the lively 1.6 (according to the brits who had 1.6 diesels, 1.4, 1.3, and 1.25 petrols), ABS, discs up front and drums rear, sharp 16" alloys, fogs and pretty chunky steering wheel controls. It's 'Moondust Silver' in colour with a black cloth interior with red inserts on the seats and doors. Tyres are pretty good Khumos and won't need replacing for a while, came with 6 months rego but didn't have books.

Fun fact: In the UK you could get a full leather interior.

I found Fred on Gumtree and the photos used were just post-detailing – not as nice on pickup

Myself and a friend took the train to Redfern and picked it up. Looked over everything but failed to test one thing which we didn't notice until we were driving home at 10pm in minus temperatures... yep, no heater. Yeah. Bugger.

I went into the local Ford dealer and asked them to have a look at the system and tell me what's wrong and how much it'll take to fix. Unfortunately it wasn't anything cheap and turned out to be both the front control panel in the dash and the heater box itself. The quote to fix them both? A cool $2,200 – almost the value of the car!

So not wanting to do everything in a rush I decided to drive it for a while and just get used to the car.

We've just registered it and it's passed all inspections with flying colours so I know it was a good buy - just a cold one.

Pros:
  • I do like this period of design with Ford; their "New Edge" design language encompassed the Ka, Focus, Puma, Mondeo, Couger, Fiesta, AU Falcon and a few others
  • I finally have a 3 door car
  • it's a pretty solid car with minimal hassles
  • it uses stuff-all petrol ($45 of 98 a fortnight with a solid 90% fang rate)

Cons:
  • it's not the XR4 so miss out on some chassis and handling tweaks and visual goodies
  • bumpers are pretty dinged up and will need resetting or replacing
  • one of the rear seat latches doesn't work and can be a PITA and/or expensive to replace
  • I have the feeling that it was a DIY project or had strange tinting as the windows have air bubble between it and the body seal
  • it's got no bloody heater!

Why the name? Well I already have Barry the beige brick and the Fiesta has already been effing with me, and really, Fred isn't cute or feminine - perfect. Works quite well.

It's also one of the few proper names that consists of co-located keys on the keyboard, so it's a minimal effort name.

    I like these.

I bought one new in '04 and it was a great car. Had it for 2 years and 110 000km

That looks nice, what did you do to the suspension?

Just some springs, nothing too exciting.

It also had Focus Zetec alloys. They are similar in design to the Fiesta optional 16's but are 17 inch

Ohhh, very nice. Ironically, the most expensive wheel for tyres is the optional 16s.

I'm looking at springs, shocks and brake discs and pads as my main upgrades. If I can get a set of cheap XR4 bumpers I'll go those as well, although I do like the styling as-is. I actually prefer the original lights too.

    Noice!
I like these, like the new shape too (well - except the sedan they tried - best never spoken-of again there).
Just don't let Ash near it ... :-D

Looks like the local wrecker (not that many in Canberra!) will have the heater box out of the donor car tomorrow so I'll pick that up and get the aircon decommissioned ready for getting the dash out. That's the plan at least.

Ken Block hip or Will Smith hip ... I can't pick who would win!
Ok, 2001-ish Will Smith would destroy Ken Block, but the Smith hipness has slowly leaked away since ... the stale prince ...

Nice little 1.6L turb-rah fiesta St near my house. Sticker price was $26k. Focus St $30k, mustang ecoboost, $35k
  • edited July 2015 2096 / 16joined Apr 2014
$26k US? Really? Wow, that's considerably more than here! And odd given that the Focus is only about 12% more, here it's about 35% more.
They must be trying to boost their image by not being inexpensive. Dunno how often that works ...
Although from what I read, it's easier to get a big discount from sticker? We really only got the price of onroads & options off our demo Commode wagon.

I got the local aircon place to decom. the aircon and thought I'd give it a quick clean so we're not working in muck. But what was going to be a quick vacuum turned into a bigger effort as I couldn't turn a blind eye to the greasy, dusty muck in all the seat bases, bolt holes and carpet.

I pulled out the seats, took off some trim and afterwards I was left with a bucket full of black water. Very eww.

So front HVAC control panel and replacement heater box and matrix has been bought for $250 and waiting in the garage. I also have another $250-300 worth of parts together ready for ordering from the UK which will replace the heater hoses that were removed by the previous owner when the bypassed the heater (fuckers).

Still, we're $1900 ahead of what Ford quoted!

Boogers, semen and lady juice. Top Gear taught me that.

The Fiesta is looking pretty cool. Does it do skids?
