Hi all I'm asking a question that has probably been answered here before.
I've pulled out my motor and wiring still attached when I pulled it out of the car the wiring perished at the terminals. So I have 2 options repair existing wiring or.
I have also pulled out the motor and wiring from a 89 that I'm stripping as one.
So is there any easy way of swapping the wiring that doesn't mean I need to know what the heck I'm doing ?
Can I plug and play if I change the harness under the dashboard with the one from the 89 because I would like to +t in the near future and think that the 89 wiring is a better option for the future?

Lets get one thing clear. The reason why you have pulled the wiring is because your current harness has perished and you are replacing it?
Your best option in terms of it being a simple swap would be to find a harness from an 88. The 88's dont have the bio degradable harness AFAIK. That way you could retain the rest of the fuel system and simply lay the new harness on the engine, plug it all in and away you go.
Swapping in a harness from an 89 will require you to do a bit more more. Important terms for you to know are the difference between LH2.2 and LH2.4.
LH2.2 is found in 86 - 88 240s. It is the system that your car will have now. LH2.4 is found in 89 and later 240s. This system is quite a bit more advanced in its operation but not necessarily in its wiring. To swap your car from LH2.2 you will need a few things. You will need:
-LH2.4 engine harness.
-LH2.4 ECU computer
-LH2.4 Ignition computer. This unit is usually referred to as an EZK116K
-Powerstage
-Crank postion sensor and LH2.4 flexplate. Someone may be able to confirm if an LH2.2 flexplate works but AFAIK it doesnt.
-LH2.4 instrument cluster to accept the speed sensor.
-LH2.4 distributor. The difference between the LH2.2 and LH2.4 one is the LH2.4 one doesnt have the slot for adjustment or the hall effect. LH2.4 control all of the timing itself.
I think thats it but I may have forgotten a few things. Either way as you can see it is quite an involved swap that you wont be finishing on a weekend. Thats not to say you cannot do it because you most certainly can. You should just familiarize yourself with whats involved before you start and find it too much. Im all about people learning new things and encourage anyone to give anything a go.
In terms of benefits you wont see too many if its an NA and even as a turbo the benefits wont be thaaaat great. LH2.4 on average will return better fuel economy. Its ability to change the timing on the fly is great for taking advantage of better grade fuels. LH2.4 will also throw codes in the event anything goes wrong but LH2.2 wont. LH2.4 is also supported a bit more in the chip world where you can get chips for LH2.4 for things like E85 or just running more boost. LH2.2 basically has no aftermarket support.
Hope this helps with your decision!

Thanks black dynamite
If I decide to swap out what wiring can I leave any and what must be swapped the harness on the 89 motor is still attached do I have to swap all the wires (fire wall motor and dash) or just motor and dash as I have the hole car so I have everything but hate wire diagrams thay do my head in.
But 87 wagon is on stands with both motors siting in front of it
The wagon was on gas so needs rebuild thats why I was swapping motors in the first place no gas know. Just fuel. Gas tank is coming out to get boot back.
? If anyone wants to play with hole swap idea BBQ and beers or scotch are on offer?
I'm willing to have a go just don't want to go in the wrong direction with wiring than have to find why it's not working.

The speed sensor you don't need to worry about so much, but the rest, yes.

You need the speed sensor otherwise you will get a CEL and idle will be erratic.
