Hi people im looking for an easy gearbox swap for my 740t its manual obviously but what im looking to do down the track hopefully is the 16v conversion but im looking for a box that would handle a bit more power then the M46 i currently have ive heard the commodore boxes are fairly simple to do but i wasnt sure if it was the way to go.

These days the best option is a Borg Warner T5, using an adaptor kit to the M46 bellhousing, the kits are sold by Kaplhenke Racing, RSI, and possibly others.
Local cars fitted with T5's are EA to BA Falcons, and VN-VS2 Commodores. I'm not sure if any of the local applications use an input shaft of suitable length for the Volvo conversion, you may have to obtain a Mustang or Camaro one from the US. I'm also not sure whether the local versions have the shifter located correctly to come up through the shifter hole in a 700 series floor, you may need to change the rear housing too.
Others can probably comment more accurately on this stuff.

Okay that sounds quite reasonable i was thinking the t5 might be the way to go but was not sure if the bits to make it suit were readily available i was reading the w55 supra box was another option but they might be a bit harder to come across

The discussion we have had is on this section of forum. The au and ba falcon box is the right length needed as Jon found out. The vs commodore box is slightly too short as jay and myself found out. Adaptor is easy to get. And the box you will need to change the input shaft to the mustang 5l shaft.

alternatively you can contact alex for the M46 to BWT5 Adapter, as i have the CAD drawing for the one we used on my car. there are a bunch of other things the american threads seem to "forget" to mention or show. and recommendations in our thread. alex linked above.
the other thing is EA generation 5speeds are not world class boxes, so you can strike them off the list even if they were the right length (which they are not)
good luck

Okay so au or ba is the way to go from what your saying @Vee_Que would that be from the v8's or just the 6cyl? And how hard would a input shaft from the mustang be to source? And how did both of youse go with the slave cylinder was there much trouble adapting that to suit?
Vee_Que
You use all m46 bellhousing parts. And a different clutch disc. The adaptor means you only change the input shaft and tailshaft length any decent driveshaft shop can do.
From the thread. Which I assume you had a read through all pages? It says 6cyl au/ba box.

Alright no worries , okay sorry im only using my phone at the moment and it wont load the link properly ill have to read through it once i get my laptop back hopefully tomorrow.

And then you have the other swaps, r154, w58 etc. but not really a feasible option given the price .
Link works.
Cj1992
Yeah i was looking at the r154 option but getting hold of one where i am is a bit tricky and yeah the link deffs works but my phone wont load it properly lol..

What about the V8 T5s? and BF Falcons? I need it to withstand 150rwkw ??Nm* and karate clutch kicks :D
Standard BA is 182kw @ 380Nm. Jay how many Nm does your car produce?
NB (haven't read the T5 convo yet but I will now)

Try this link

anything after BA series 1 (early stuff) use the T56 (6speed) which has been proven to have bad ratios for our engines, and a different front housing pattern.
the 6 cylinder box is the longest housing. (alex might correct me) the v8 always used the T56 box.
Vee_Que
The v8 was t5z like the xr6t. Not worth the price premium. They hold more than that pretty easily on higher torque motors...

People please don't read the USA stuff about boxes. It is totally different.
1 ... @blondejay get some plates jet cut?
2... @Vee_Que make a list of the boxes
3. Profit?

Well i'm starting my swap real soon, deadline is July 1st. Depending on how hard it is I might even attempt this beast myself. I've done timing belt and water pump on the car and couple stuff surrounding it, all for the first time so I've still got the winning mindset. Granted these jobs are easy to the average DIYer. And all I did was follow instructions from a website lol. I will probably be the 10th person in Australia to do it plus I have this forum and the people who have done the swap so I won't be in trouble.
I'm more than happy to create a detailed write up for us aussies so everything is centralised, easy to follow. I will have a garage to work in and some basic tools. So it's time to gather the parts!

The other thread that's has been linked in here has mentioned which boxes work with which favs best. 7/9 - AU/ba (early)
I don't think many people have researched the r154 or the w58 quite as much here in aus, as I think the price scares them.
Cj1992
I know in sydney i could of gotten a 2jz with the r154 for $1800 but they didnt want to split the motor and box and they still wanted atleast $1000 for the box it if they ever did
deleted_user_160
Yup, then you would want to put a kit through it, and THAT, is the biggest expense those two boxes face.
Especially in comparison to the bw t5
