I'm looking at buying a 2004 V50 T5 with around 110K on the clock. Coming from BMW, I don't know the first thing about this car or Volvo in general. Is this model generally considered reliable? What are the main issues I should be looking for? I'm seeing many complaints about poor fuel efficiency but can't find any figures for this model, can anyone shed some light?

Manual version == amazingly reliable
Auto version == change fluid and have software updated by volvo and then very reliable

Thanks for the advice! How often should the fluid be changed on the auto? Are there any turbo issues?
Rob
The engine is a close to perfect as an engine can be, I wouldn't expect any troubles from it.

I've just purchased a V50 but it's a 2010 2.4 front wheel drive model. Everything I read about them only gave me more confidence about its reliability. As already mentioned, you need to ensure that its had its gearbox fluid changed when required but with the proper (more expensive) genuine gearbox fluid. Service records will be the key.
I nearly picked up a V50 T5 AWD but decided on a better condition, lower km 2.4 R-design. The choice of a V50 over a an Audi A4 Avant and Skoda Octavia wagon was a combination of safety, reliability, design and fit for purpose. Simply, it was a lot of car for the money.

You get much much more with a Volvo for similar cost to a low spec bm or audi.
Get the thermostat changed as well.
It is hidden away so never gets looked at.
You wont have turbo issues like bmw do.

This car sounds very promising, I'll go drive one tomorrow. Can anyone provide fuel consumption figures for the 2.4L 5 cylinder with or without turbo? Also, I'm looking at pictures and it seems very difficult to replace the stereo with an aftermarket unit. Does anyone have experience with this?
Philia_Bear
Its impossible to replace the stereo
Find one with Bluetooth
Fuel consumption
Auto = horrid to OK
Manual = Good to very good
Or just find one with the D5 motor, they exist

Is the 2.0 diesel a reliable engine?
Philia_Bear
Yes
No issues assuming not a later model connected to the ford powershit trans

We can repair the stereos, if AM is not working, The only issues we see with cars are lower control arm bushes, fuel rail sensor, THE SEM, main fuse board changed a few now at $1800 a pop, head gasket issues, from owners not looking after there cars,(thermostat is in a crap position so not changed that often) also expansion tanks crack from the heat, the engine sumps sit lower than an 850, and we have changed or fixed a few of these, also replaced key readers for the range. Over all not a bad unit

what bmw would you be coming from?
VPT02
Not bad little Volvo these ones but there are a few things to look out for as with any car.
Make sure you have a service book and good records if possible.
The first series T5 where not awd so if not looking for an awd you only have the first years 2004/2005 till late 2010 when they went back to fwd again.....well for Aussie market anyway!
