Update:
So it turns out my 740 is probably more like a 750, hybrid cross between 740 and 760 since my strut tops are a very old style with black plastic caps like the 240. This was established a while back tho.

Here is the older style upper spring perch which is metal, not rubber like the new ones. Note how the older spring does NOT taper in like the newer style springs

The 24mm gland nut isn't even able to thread on! As Alex stated the shock mounting is actually lower on the later shocks in order to compensate for the increased height of new strut tops

Even the mounting studs seem like different thread pitch

Basically spent all day Tuesday chasing this rare part as everyone else had the newer circular ones volparts, berry, sandalwood, everywhere in between. billiavolvo in camberwell wanted $1084!!! The girl couldn't even tell me which style it was...
Finally John from Voldat found 2 round the back which I proceeded to fit but unfortunately my mech still did not let me pass the RWC since one was still unsatisfactory.
Had I stopped the mech from fitting the new rotors and lines I could've saved money and fitted newer style struts with the jumbo brakes.
Classic car life :-q
