Rob
even if it is a bit rough, that is pretty good buying for a T5 manual
94_850_t5
I reckon it's a great buy. Too far away for me :(

Looks pretty good to me!
Interior is good. Paint may be losing clear coat but just Turtle wax it and keep on waxing it...
Have driven a couple of neglected early T5s and boy they were crap. This looks good!

That is cheaper than I was quoted for manual swap parts :-)

What's the most likely stuff to be broken, if anything? Seriously considering picking this up instead of the S80 I was looking at, seems to be not too bad mechanically-speaking.
egads
Much less likely to be broken than an s80. Possibly blocked pcv leading to a touch of leakyness and maybe oil passages to turbo blocked/obscured a bit? Much less to go wrong. I would recommend manual 850's every day of the week to anyone that would listen.
Rob
do it. it should be a good car.

Yep, i'd second those comments. May need some tlc with vac and water hoses. If you do pick it up the PCV would be the first thing to check. You dont want to blow out the crank seal if you can help it. Other than this head gasket problems if not maintained. Check for water in oil or engine running hot/losing water.
Ex850R
If just oil in water that is fine its only the radiator needing replaced , check for H/G problem , this can bring price down , not a deal breaker but you need to know.

Unfortunately, parents just struck it down on the grounds (despite me having the actual cash to buy it, register it and insure it) that it's "too old" and might be "unreliable" and "unsafe". Pretty sure those last two are mutually exclusive for most Volvos but oh well, looking at a nice S80 tomorrow now anyway. Thanks for all the advice though, that was a surprise how quickly you guys were to help ^_^
Ex850R
Unreliable is the word that goes with an S80 , unless it is a manual you will be off the road soon enough and wishing you never laid eyes on it....
And the cost of fixing the S80 gearbox is between $2000 ( conservative) and $9000 for a new box....
Dont do it .
If an S80 is what you must get then get a NISSAN MAXIMA instead.....
Rob
if you are concerned about unreliable I wouldn't be touching that S80
Ex850R
Ask your parents to come on here , there are many knowledgeable peeps on here , Volvo Technicians from dealers and others with much time on the cars , just about every omne will say "do not buy and S80"
Well , only if it is $300 and comes with 12m rego as the gearbox WILL fail badly and expensively.
Good luck there with the convincing...

Oh I already know about the S80 issues, but trying to fight my parents on that front is like trying to fight a dragon with a toothpick. Plus I plan to get a performance trans rebuild parts set/kit from Triple Edge Performance (look them up, S8ET6 from VS has a rebuild from them and he was making about 300fwhp before he pulled the engine to fit a K24 to it) well before it blows up, which is cheaper than a replacement box, and I can do it myself without removing the engine or trans from the car (get engine crane, unbolt subframe and engine mounts, drop engine a bit, remove pass. side suspension and you have full access to the transmission side cover). And I wasn't concerned about reliability either, just mum and dad.

I certainly quickly replied as you mentioned looking at an s80. It will not be anywhere near as reliable as an 850. 850 has less airbags but otherwise the safety stuff is the same. The 850 will actually be more stable on the road and would do better in avoiding most accidents. This is all opinion but I have lived with both and the s80 was just not engineered to succeed without lots of maintenance and a fair bit of it isn't as easy to DIY.

I understand the S80 will be a challenge in terms of DIY and modifications, but I love a good challenge. Plus, I like being a little different haha.
