Hi I'm new to this site, I'm looking to convert my 1990 Volvo 740 turbo from manual to auto, I want to buy a complete auto conversion , thank you :)

Wow. This is something new. If you want to go auto, I'll put my hand up first by purchasing your pedal box. :D
Why the change? As most people are screaming to change from auto to manual. As especially with these cars the aw71L box is a touch sluggish.

Hi
I'll do the conversion for free to keep the old manual bits
I've got several good autos to pick from and i can also supply the nicer post 92 shifter
I'm in Sydney if it makes a difference

Pm'd. He's in Melbourne I reckon and I will straight swap for manual parts and swap for a aw71L that isn't shagged.

Nice. Everyone jump on his manual pedal box -_-;

Wow I didn't expect such interest for manual parts lol!
I'm looking for a change by going auto and building it to handle a lot of power because I'm building my motor and the manual gearboxes wouldn't be able to handle the power, it's going to be a big setup with some nice power figures :)

Your going to spend a decent amount on building an auto or converting to an auto for bigger power. Alex knows his autos well. And jas a very good set up one. When he decides to build another one :D
Alex alao did the T5 swap on my car.
And the difference in the way the car drives from the auto aw71L is chalk and cheese. As autos use a decent amout of power to get them working.
20kw at the wheels between Alex and I ans we are on almost identicle setups except he's on a worked aw71L Im on the aussie T5.
I'm not saying don't do it. Your application could be very different to mine. Just consider the outcomes of both.

If you want to go fast down the qaurter. You need an auto. Jay doesn't care for going fast just likes the car to feel fast ;)

we have this discussion regularly, being fast isnt always about the 1/4 mile. there is a world of racing disciplines out there. ive never been about being fast. like to be quick. sadly my current turbo isnt quick, is a slow spool. :(

One of the Swedish performance companies used to sell adapter parts to fit GM turbo pattern auto's to redblocks, that'd be the go for an auto that will handle lots of torque, with lots of aftermarket support.
That said, I have an AW71 and some of the associated bits available for $100.

I've converted at least 5 cars from auto to manual, never the other way around, why would you? A manual 740 turbo is as rare as hens teeth. Keep it as is. A slush box will turn into a bit of a dog. If it was a S70 T5 then that would be different, but then we are talking about a very different car.

Yeh I'm just over losing boost through gear changes and I'm over the weak m46 gearboxes and I'm looking for a change

A good S70T5 is a great thing as an auto and maybe great in country as a manual.
Thinking though , if you build up a fast car with the auto and enjoy it then who cares if you use a manual 740T to do it?
The 740 manual would be better with a T5 5sp anyway.
If this is sold down the track it can be converted back by anyone that wants it that way it wont diminish its value as it sounds like Cam will be building a nice car.

AW30-40 with T6 motor
You will never look back (I haven't anyways)

I will swop all auto parts with you for manual parts and I am in Melbourne

"Weak M46 gearboxes"???? They are tough as nails. My son had a 240 Turbo, and I mean seriously turbo'ed, and had it coupled to an M46. No problem at all, no slip of the overdrive either. The trick with the overdrives is to replace the actuating piston seals (o-rings) with slightly larger ones for better sealing, then get rid of the auto transmission fluid and replace it with 10w 40 or similar. Thats actually specified by Volvo for warmer countries like Australia. No more slip.
