1972 to 1988.
VIN from 1975 onwards includes the factory code, which is the number following model year designator & preceding the six digit chassis number. If it's 6 then it's definitely Aussie assembled.
For the earlier VIN up to 1974 check the steering wheel position code preceding the model year designator, if it's 9 then it was produced as a right hand drive CKD (knock down kit) to be assembled in another factory, so it's most likely Aussie assembled. The other two factories that assembled right hand drive Volvo's back then were in South Africa & Malaysia, and I would assume you're highly unlikely to find a South African or Malaysian assembled Volvo in Oz.
A_Volvo_Driver;33566 wroteMy 84 says that it was made in Sweden on the plates in the engine bay. I don't know if it used to be metallic, as sure as hell isn't metallic now
My Thailand assembled S90 also says "Made in Sweden" on the VIN plate, since it wasn't MADE in Thailand only assembled there.
