G'day all,
I drove my '82 244 for the first time in a while last week, its been mostly in storage for about a year, getting driven once every few weeks or so.
I noticed a slight vibration in the steering wheel which I suspected was an unbalanced wheel. This progressively got worse and then as I was slowing gently for a roundabout, the brake pedal went straight to the floor, "BRAKE FAILURE" light illuminated.
Prior to this I hadn't noticed any degradation of the brakes or softness in the pedal. Got the car pulled over and the front right wheel was noticeably smoking and had plenty of heat radiating off it. The front left wheel felt quite warm too but wasn't smoking. Brake fluid was still completely full.
So I suspect the lack of use has led to the brakes getting somewhat stuck on the front but I'm not sure how I lost complete pressure so suddenly, perhaps the fluid boiled from the caliper getting so hot? Started the car a couple days after the event and the pedal feels normal now, lifted the front up and pushed the pads out but then both sides lock on the disc again with an application of the brake pedal.
I'm looking at a basic repair kit and an overhaul repair kit, guessing I'll go with the overhaul kit. Car is '82 and has Girling calipers, I've linked the two kits I'm looking at below.
EDIT: I've just read on an ancient Ford forum that DVS might do these kits too, so will inquire about that when I can!
If anyone has any advice on if this overhaul kit is the best way to proceed, please let me know!
Cheers,
Jacob
