B23 were all big main bearing, big rods.
B230 from year model 85-87 were small main bearing with centre thrust, small rods.
B230 from YM88 on were big main bearing blocks (K blocks) with a rear thrust bearing. Early production of YM88 engines had the small rods, then later production 88 had the 13mm rods.
Later B230s (L blocks) are identified by 4 bumps on the oil gallery on the exhaust side, which are preparation for piston squiters. These oil squiters were fitted to later L block engines with round-tooth timing gears.
B23s in OZ were all meant for leaded petrol; YM85 with B230s were certified for ULP. You may run into roadworthy issues by installing an engine that is older than the car.
If your plans are for turbocharging, although you can do K-Jet turbo, you're better off going LH2.4 and using an 89+ B230 as a starting point. K-Jet turbo parts are almost nonexistent in Australia. In your place, I'd try swapping the B23E for a good B230 89+ long engine, which can otherwise be had for not many dollars.
K-Jet requires at least 5 bar of fuel pressure. LH2.x only needs 3 bar. YMMV, but I prefer a dual pump system as fuel surge in corners is a real biach, especially when it cooks the high pressure pump.
