850 Exporting cars

in General
Anyone on here had any experience with exporting a car from Oz ?
Did you do it yourself , use a company ?
Do tell your experience, good or bad , do like a bit of random chit chat ....

Depending where you'd want it shipped to is the issue, every country has different regulations.
I was actually going to pm you sometime as you know full well on how to do it coming this way hey mate . I'll be doing it the other way 😉
One of my customers is about to ship his c30 back to England.
It has been pretty straightforward but I'll ask him for some more details as he is coming in tomorrow
That'll be great, appreciated.
@jrhendo may be able to provide details, he did this years' Peking to Paris Rally in his 1974 OZ Volvo 144.
I've only imported to OZ twice - an 1800E and a 780 Bertone.
can i ask who you used to import? been looking overseas mainly at uk and surprisingly japan... just dont know who to trust on the internet
Depends where u want to go.
if your doing it to drive your car OS you can apply through a few different exporters and have your reg on it while OS on a permit.
Or selling your car to go OS is usually managed by the buyer on their end.
There are lots of websites and info out there for you to trawl through .
I used Schumacher Cargo Logistics based in Long Beach CA.

ah ok thanks sweet ill look into them.
well i guess on the flip side what about importers?
This is a worthwhile bloke to talk to, he sorted out my car paperwork once it arrived in Australia, including customs valuation, taxes etc etc, I dropped it off to him on a trailer and came back 2 days later and it had import plate and mod plate and was registered, I had absolutely no drama whatsoever, he imports from all over the world and exports as well.

Thanks heaps I'll definitely be giving him a call
He has a faceache page as well which shows alot of what he imports/exports, some very nice motors!!

You should also look at South Africa for importing cars, exchange rate is very favourable to the Aus $, and rhd vehicles.
I'll tell our office manager, she just converted her licence to oz is from there, her father is well off chief magistrate or summat so will send her a nice car I bet!
We exported HQ Holdens there iirc!
What was rough cost?
$3000 to ship from the UK in a container with 3 other cars, they are specialist containers 2 up 2 down, then the Oz gubbyment charge about the same again in taxes/inspections/compliance /rego etc, so 6k approx to have a registered driving car.
6k really 😲
I had my 1800ES shipped over from the US in 2006...IIRC it was about $3000USD from Houston TX in its own container...plus another $3000AUD on arrival (import charges, GST, etc)...so I’d think $6K in today’s money isn’t too bad! :)
I used CARS UK to take the Volvo to Beijing. Pretty much compulsory because they have the warehouse facilities etc for picking the car up there. They were very good: picked the car up from home and after the event delivered it back. Excellent service, but at a price.
I've also used Schumacher to bring a Corvette in to Australia from Colorado. No complaints there: I would have used them again to ship the rally car back from Paris, but they didn't service that end. If you are going somewhere they service, I'd recommend them.
Good luck with the shipping - its a bit of a bureaucratic nightmare, especially if you plan to bring the car back.
I should add Price and Speed was the local agent for my last 3 ‘bring back to Australia’ exercises. I can give you my contact guy’s details if you’re interested. They may know who’s good, cheap etc.
if you’re going to bring the car back to Australia, be aware of the zero asbestos issue. Border Control has been very strict lately. In theory zero asbestos also applies when exporting a car.
