Iirc and @timbo should comment, the drive belt tensioner likes to fail in a way that causes the drive belt to eat the timing belt
If it's just a dead timing belt... 20 bent valves are likely
Most of the time the pistons come out fine, sometimes not
Either way, lower cost is going to be swapping a known good engine into it and then moving on
