Chris Hmmmm maybe, the very early cars were fully imported. Source: my father's 244 was an early one, reg April 75, built in Sweden
There was always a mix, depending on colour, timing etc...but like Angus said most were assembled locally. The locally-assembled 2-series cars I’ve seen have a thin “body number” metal plate spot-welded to the shock tower just rearward of the battery tray. This is the one on my 79 245 for example:
Any ones with that plate you know for sure are local assembly. Even the local assembly ones say “MADE IN SWEDEN” on the VIN plate (see below) so some people THINK their car was fully imported (well, it was “imported” - in bits!) it was indeed locally-assembled.
This VIN plate is from a locally-assembled 81 245:
This is the VIN plate from a 79 sedan I just sold (also locally-assembled). Note it doesn’t say “MADE IN SWEDEN” but it’s sort of implied! ;)
Fun facts for the evening! :)
