Hi all,
Anyone please help adivse if there is any big issue with the car:
Pre-purchase inspection reports:
- Engine breather partially blocked
- Engine oil pressure takes time to get pressure up
Done by a reputable mechanic in Melbourne (among the recommended on this forum most of the time). Everything else is still OK.
It's a 2007 Volvo XC90 LE Auto 4x4 MY07; 2.5L Turbo Petrol
Should I buy it or not? Any advise?
Thanks a lot

Avoid!

Thanks @Philia_Bear
So you mean to avoid that 2.5 Petrol model all together or only because the issues in the report? Thank you.

The car has not been driven much in the last 2 years (only done 5,000 km for 2 years; 155,000km in total). Good service history but missed services in the last two years (when time is due).
The mechanic said it's still in good shape for its age, but it needs to fix the two issues I mentioned + transmission fluid service.
Even so, your advice is still stay clear of it?

Oil pressure issue is probably the "o" rings in the sump, usually caused by lack of servicing or using inferior quality oils. My main concern is how long its been low on oil pressure and the potential damage that could have been caused to the engine by continuing to drive it. If its to the point where the oil light is coming on at idle and/or the top end of the engine is audibly noisy then i would avoid

if this is all that's wrong its not to bad, Remove sump and acid wash then fit new seals also clean clean out breather port in sump. Do the engine breather and clean throttle unit all should be good. Make sure engine pick up is cleaned as well. cheers steve Masons Prestige Volvo

Thank you all for your advice! So I guess it's best to avoid if I have a better option, otherwise I can still live with that if the issue had not spread to more serious problem.

Id be doing the above and doing an oil pressure test before pulling the trigger.
Many times ive done pickup orings only for it to be too late.
Id only trust the motor if the light had come on with myself driving, and Id switched it off very soon after.
The block im using at the moment in the R had one such occurrence, customer sold the car to our shop with a known dud gearbox, on test driving for a short period of time we found the oil light to come on too.
I did the Orings with the hope that Id caught it in time and Id be able to use the 2.5T in my R but was soon to be very disappointed.
The bearings were so stuffed I ended up replacing the crank, bearings and a plethora of other parts.
I'd stay away, XC90 2.5Ts are in plentiful supply, the last thing you want to be doing is sourcing a replacement engine

Thanks all. I've just talked with the owner and get him to fix everything, making sure it's all good before I can buy.

If it's been like that for a while y ou can have damage as previous posts say and fixing the pcv will just blow out seals and possibly still have bearing damage etc etc. Walk away.
It would have to be $2000 car and in great condition cos a new motor installed is even then not worth the hassle.....

Thanks much for all you advice. I've decided to pull out after all of this. Need to look for another one now! Such a time consuming process!!

I am also looking at V8 but am quite afraid of fuel consumption!
And should I look for a later year, say after 2010 to have a better chance of a more reliable engine? What year is better?
Thanks all, much appreciated!!

I think the V8 is the most desirable. It's not like the 2.5 is particularly economical. It's a 2+ tonne car, after all.
