Hi ,
Just require a bit of advice on whether to flush/change automatic transmission fluid ?
Firstly I have no service record with this vehicle so have no idea if this has ever been done during the 235k of motoring.
The transmission runs exceptionally smooth albeit the occasional pull on take off but nothing to be concerned about. So this is more about ongoing maintenance to keep the car running the best it can.
I have heard from various sources that flushing the transmission only agitates particles and unless the service has been done every 50k its advised to leave well alone ? I find that strange ?
If its advisable to flush/change does anyone here have a simple step by step process ? I have already purchased the filter and gasket kit and hopefully its the correct one for 2003 although now I believe there are two variants ?
Thank you in advance Andrew

It would have definitely been serviced at least a few times to make it to 235,000
Second, there are lots of myths regarding "doing more damage" being a possibility when servicing a transmission, and I'm not sure why people think this, in any case it isn't true. The wear particles came from somewhere, and they are better outside your transmission than in. So change the fluid.
You said you have no service records for the vehicle, so if in doubt, get it serviced. You can either do a partial fluid change and repeat it a few times or do a complete flush, I prefer the former.

Thank you Ramrod , I agree it makes sense to change it. Some destructions would be awesome if you know how ? Or have the time to post it up for me ? Done plenty of oil changes but never a transmission change. Cheers :)

Just like changing engine oil, however the filter is not like on an engine it's internal. I'm not the best at XC90s; check to see if there is a drain plug under the transmission, be careful to not be confused with the engine oil drain plug. The dipstick on those transmissions are quite hard to find too I think

Ok no problem, I know where the drain plug is and the small yellow filler plug, I assume I measure what I take out and replace the same amount each time ?

Yes you have the right idea
Ex850R
Can be pumped out one of the cooler hoses.
Beware,if any coolant in there you are up for complete new cooling system and a gearbox.
But , pump out a bit as recommend in another howto post here, stop , put same in till it clears.
