Thanks for having me guys, first post on here....
I am hoping someone may be able to confirm for me or put me onto somewhere/someone that can help confirm...
Is the Auto gearbox found in the 960 the same as the Toyota 1UZ?
I am converting a 2.5L 5 Cylinder engine (Ford/Volvo) to RWD and trying to work out the easiest way about adapting either an Aussie T5 series or W-Series Toyota box behind it.
I am hoping I may be able to get away with sourcing a 960 Auto bell housing and utilizing an off the shelf 1UZ to W-Series adapter... Save me making up an adapter myself to suit...
Thanks in advance.

You are thinking correctly.

Sounds like a great project too :-)

@Ghettobird has had a closer look at the 1uz adaptors on whiteblocks
gavinh
Don't you have to swap the input and out put shaft over?

Thanks for the reply guys.
Hoping @Ghettobird may be able to chime in then?
@gavinh this is the kind of stuff that keeps me scratching my head... Do you know this from experience?
gavinh
Yeah, I had a A340E from a supra, to replace a gear box from a 960, they were similar but quite different as well.
Gear selector was on the wrong side, swapped, input and output were swapped, the A340 used a mechanical kick down as and doesn't have the vss on the left hand side nor the tone ring in the box, I drilled a14mm hole were the sensor was (already had the moulding in the aluminium for its position and m6? Bolt hole) and refitted the tone ring and planetary gears from volvo box.
To over come the electronic kick down from the 960 I just installed the valve body from the 960 box, should have replaced all the friction plates but the looked in good condition.
I was able to do all of this with out specialists tools.
There was abit more to it but this was my brief experience, there is plenty of info online regarding the Toyota stuff, but not volvo.
If your not confident in doing this, try and find a volvo box that hasn't had the trans cooler split.

Being that I'm going with a manual hopefully it won't be as troublesome.... Apart from sussing out Flywheel, clutch & Clutch Slave setup

Yeah manual will be easier as you will need to source a tcu for the electronics of just buy a 960 and wreck it.
Volvo in Europe do the M90 for the white block and its a bolt on manual.
Round 2-2.5k from berry's motor group.

Car will be running a standalone ECU so electrics won't be an issue either thank god ha ha.
What sort of power can the M90 boxes take tho?
gavinh
Not to sure, think the T5 is the way to go if your chasing hp
Esky
Was thinking that originally but leaning more towards a W58 or R154... Fist up tho I need to source the 960 bellhousing if anyone has or knows someone wanting/willing to part with one?

M90s are getting thin on the ground in the UK/Europe. They are fundamentally a RWD M56, so are quite robust.
W5x boxes are getting difficult to source, and prices were quite high, last time I looked. Seemed like they’d crossed the point where their cost:durability ratio wasn’t favourable and that the R154 was probably the better option.
Also look at the BMW box option. You can buy BMW 6-speeds out of the UK very cheaply - even the freight costs make the total price reasonable (like half what most Aussie wreckers want).
I started a thread on this forum asking how it is done. I am pretty sure that’s how I will go for my car.
I have a number of BMW Getrag 5-speeds that will be very marginal behind a B6304, but will get the conversion done with one of them. If/when the Getrag dies, I will replace with a ZF or a 6-speed.

Oh, and I will have a 960 auto box for sale soonish (or immediately if you want to come to Yass and remove it).

The Nissan box is the new kid on the block.
I thought the Toyota boxes were, apart from rare and overpriced with partstoo expensive as well, were not up to much power? Bro in law has a few W boxes. Was for a shitty old English car converted to Toyo Redtop 4cyl....
He may sell em.

Cd009 aren't cheap and dimensions are huge compared to w5x and t5s. From @Esky user name hes putting it in a ford escort?

You'd be correct but everything can be made to fit ;)

If you've got some pics of the project feel free to start a thread in the non volvo section.
T5 gearboxs are basically beyond their limit with the stock RNC whiteblock so not ideal unless you drop some coin upgrading. Their main appeal is their size.
You going with a maxx ecu setup?

Ive hopped from planned gearbox to gearbox with my build, Initially it was the W58 box - bought a plate and all the hydraulic bits for it, flipped that then went for a T5 adapter plate which is still on my shelf, then it was the R15X series boxes, now Im looking into the CD009s.
For me parts availability is everything. I never seriously considered the M90 because of their extreme price and are near totally impossible to find here apart from the few examples that have been privately brought over.
Ive never killed a manual gearbox, I drive my cars quite hard but always shift with a bit of mechanical sympathy - but knowing that ill eventually be pushing some half reasonable numbers being able to find replacement parts is very important for the upkeep of my cars.
The Tremec T5 will never hold up to the power a Whiteblock T5 can put out in stock form, let alone a T6. The W5x series boxes are getting old and rare, the R154s are getting VERY expensive and where they are probably the best of the older boxes, availability of quality boxes for a reasonable price just isnt there.
The CD009 on the other hand even though they are a bit on the pricey side will take over 1000NM in stock form, are readily available from wrecked cars AND are available brand spanking new from Nissan for a bit over 2K IIRC. The ratios are good and are proven in many drift cars for their durability. They shift nicely and are an all round schmick box.
Rodger Dee makes an adaptor plate to bolt one up to a 960 bellhousing and there are a number of people experimenting with setups as we speak.
What I would personally go for is a brand new TTV Billet lightweight flywheel drilled for a Nissan pressure plate, a friction disk with the CD009s splines and whatever hydraulic throwout is needed to make it all work together.
Only reason I havnt pulled the trigger on the swap yet is because I quite like the auto in the 240 at the moment, Ill boost it till I pop the B6304, then slap together an ebay-forged B6284t and see how far the auto will go before I blow the shit out of it - hopefully in spectacular fashion and then Ill go down the rabbit hole of manual swapping the 240!
Ever since I boosted the redblock in the 240 - killed the AW70 and slapped together an accumulator modded AW71L, Ive liked wringing the guts out of the autos from the lights - The AW30-40LE is no exception. If I can find a 2500rpm stall converter for it (Currently has the crap-spec 2100 stall converter) and cobble up the HE351 I have sitting here pretty on my bench, Ill have a heap of fun upsetting people at the lights.
Does that help a bit?
Oh and Re-sumps, just get the 960 sump and be done with it, Its easier to do the swap with the older gen whiteblock 5 as the newer gen C30/V50/XR5 stuff runs a different oiling route and can make things hard to get oil to the important stuff - @VPT02 and I mapped out all of the galleries on a D5 and worked out how we could make it work with a 960 sump for a 240... stupid stupid ideas
