940 & 960 940 Wagon B234F Bosch AMM 016

First post here and, possibly, redundant as i've not yet done a thorough search of the forum threads.

So, my 91 redbrick is guzzling fuel at a rate of about 15-16L/100km. If fuel consuption matched performance I'd be happy but this not the case.

After much reading, learning and testing I've come to the conclusion that the AMM is cactus.

ECT, O2 sensor, IAC ad FPR have all checked out reasonably close to spec. Sensors were measured at the ECU.

The AMM on the other hand has probably been cooked when the damned airbox temp spring failed and left the flap in 'flames of Mordor' mode. Instead of 2.3ish volts at idle it's reading 12.2ish. The exhaust smells rich, plugs were black/sooty and the engine idles better if I unplug the AMM.

Question is: where the hell do I buy a new AMM for a decent price?

I've been told $600 is the go for a new Bosch AMM. I've not seen any good reports of 're manufactured' AMMs or cheaper brand options. Overseas prices are attractive but freight can be ugly.

I'd really appreciate any pointers people may have from experience.

Cheers,
Mark

  • Second hand is the go. 016 is the generic lh2.4 AMM so you're safe to use any that have come off an 8v 940 or 16v 740/940.

Possibly late lh2.4 240's as well but I cant confirm that for you.

  • New ones for less than $50 on AliExpress if you want to be a guinea pig for us and report back??
0280212016 is Bosch part number I believe so just search for that on AliExpress.

from what I've read it's fitted to 240s from 1989 onward although I don't know the start month so you'd still have to look at it.

Crikey! I know that's cheap but I'm still kinda wary.

The start month is whatever the VIN says. A 10th digit of J = 1988. K = 1989. So the month is irrelevant

Alternatively, 0280212016 is fine whatever car it's from. Earlier 240s used a 0280212007 AMM with LH 2.2

Can't be too much wrong with cheap as....
I used p80 maf from China, nothing different in operation and worked for enough time for gearbox to implode.

  • Call a local Volvo workshop, they save them and should be happy to sell a second hand one. Voldat and Berry Motor Group are the Melbourne workshops. Depending where you are, the folk here will be able to recommend a good Volvo specialist for the 2/7/9 series cars.

  • Thanks for the pointers everyone’s made, I ended up going to Chris at Povey and got a working used one from him. Top person to deal with.

Couldn’t bring myself to buy a cheap Chinese AMM, reading around it seems like some are just a basic resister circuit, not a hot wire, that gives ok results at idle but after that is useless.

Consider it confirmed. 240s with LH 2.4 used an 016 AMM.
