Have a 2008 XC90 D5 that mechanic recommended a trans flush on last service report. No specific urgency. Had done month back, did seem to change gears quicker after. Out of the blue this morning drove for 5 minutes, stopped at an intersection with a slight incline, went to take off and no forward propulsion. Reversed down road fine, pulled over, tried again-nothing. Turned off, left it a bit, tried after 30 minutes (whilst called a tow) and it seemed fine but I let it get towed to garage. If I think about it I did feel the driver area seemed warm over the weekend and checked water levels. No error messages. Garage think might need a transmission specialist- any ideas? Guess I'm asking, how crippling might this be?

@iceton1975 at Berry motor group fixes them a lot.

Thanks Snoopy. I have dug out the invoice on the trans flush as I gather the right fluid replacement is very important. It only mentions transaxle fluid (same?) as Maxlife. As further question to anyone-could the wrong fluid screw the transmission like this? Cheers

If it's Valvoline max life trans fluid it meets the 3309 spec of the volvo.
It's relatively uncommon for these boxes to play up unless they've spent lots of time towing or high KMs.

Ok thanks, the flush recommendation was from my usual Volvo mechanic but I went to a local guy for the job for work convenience - panicking it was a bad move. They also mention adding a conditioner but no name. Just odd NO sign of problems, no slipping just the feeling of warm cabin that may be unrelated. Only had car 14 months, has tow bar-approaching the 200k mark. I was getting it serviced every 5000 km on Volvo mechanic recommendations.

I can totally understand it is concerning and not cheap if the box needs a rebuild. First step would be get the codes scanned by someone with Vida. How many litres of trans fluid did they charge you for out of interest?
VolvoDeger
what area are you in?, as I have done these gearbox's , not common for these to fail so would be interested in reading codes. But saying that losing drive sounds mechanical issue.

Hi guys . First up really valuing input, sure there are some mechanical minded ladies out there but my mechanical knowledge stems from the old HQ days-these Euripean cars are a tad more complex! I forgot to get the codes- will call garage back but they called an auto trans specialist who said it was common between 150-160 000 and was a valve body in the transmission and would $8k to fix and it had nothing to do with flush they just suddenly go. Garage said they could source a second hand at quarter of cost?

As an add, garage just said there were no codes at all.

Definitely not that expensive to fix or to swap a used one in.
You need a good independent volvo shop.
Wharlt area are you?

I am in Adelaide, the fellow who recommended it originally was Ronton's-only went to other as couldn't get time off work to get to usual who is about hour away! Probably rue the day. Reckon I'll get it towed to him.

Berry's will have a gearbox or get your fixed if keeping car. Not that expensive, Berry's have a place. Ask Mark.

Mate, go see Michael at Volv of Adelaide, he’s very knowledgeable about the later models including the 08 XC90 and he does amazing work, he can sort you out in no time. Also I think your mechanic is having you on with getting serviced every 5000km’s, with the correct oils etc you should be getting near 3 times that amount between servicing, sounds like he just likes your money.

It's the D5, I'd be changing oil at 7k.
The oil gets shitty from the combustion process a lot more than a petrol. Plus it's a heavy vehicle.
Oil is cheap guarantee of motor longevity and considering the D5 likes to clog up itself a good low smoke oil is going to help.
Go see Michael, good idea.

I change my oil on my d5 every 7500 klm as i own a volvo workshop, go see mick at rontons as he can help you also i have a seond hand unit or can have it rebuilt.

Try Michael at Volv of Adalaide he has great experience in these things google him also has the correct equipment to do trans flushes

Further info-had the car towed to an auto trans shop recommended by my Volvo mechanic. They called to say when they got it it drove fine-however it is 1.5 litres short of trans oil and the oil is dark despite the flush on 26/2. He would have suspected the valve body but said that normally showed up when the car was warm/hot- issue started first thing in morning. They going to run it about some more tomorrow to look further. Thanks all for advice to date!
Philia_Bear
Sounds like it has a big leak or didn't get flushed at all
VolvoDeger
question .....how do they know its low on fluid? as no dipstick and it needs to be filled and run to a set temp to allow overflow. sound like there call is wrong to me. Steve Masons Prestige
VolvoMike
If they set the level correctly then they'd know if it was low but it doesn't read that way. A transmission flush machine is the best way to flush the gearboxes with both the oil in and out being calculated and displayed. As far as D5 engine oil, in Europe the service interval is 30,000 km or 12 months so if you're using the correct spec oil, it will easily do 15,000 km or 12 months. If the reason you go to an independent service centre is cost then over servicing it will make that logic redundant.
