Julian's V8 Land Rover Discovery 1 - Doris

GhettobirdJulian (@Ghettobird) Melbourne - SE Suburbs
edited March 20 in Non-Volvo
Im soon to be the owner of an early 90s Discovery D1, 3.9L V8, auto and some 300 thousand kms.

Why? Because nobody wanted my wagon enough and the gent needed to offload this before picking up the 850.

Always liked the discos, D1s more than D2 onwards due to the ever growing complexity of their electronics and the potential for failure.

Its very original except for a set of semi - electric commodore seats.

Its a pretty chalky blue, super smooth and very straight.
No rust apart from the usual slight crispiness in the upper roof windows.

All in all a neat bit of kit, Its going to be absolutely shithouse on fuel, but having another auto car on club reg will make the commute to uni and back a few times a week a little easier - As nice and light as the clutch is on the R, I still find after 45 mins in standstill traffic I find myself wondering if I have a battery and composite demo blade for my recipro in the boot to just take my left leg off as it would be easier than suffering through Glenferrie Rd on a Tuesday morning.

Plans?
Absolutely none.

I have a rocker gasket kit coming as they are pissing out oil, a genuine oil filter coming from SMG and a set of plugs.
Reverse lights dont work, hoping its not the switch in the box, Guess Ill have to see when Its on the hoist.

Ok... maybe a centre muffler delete B)

Trying not to even consider a TD5 swap

I've always liked em too, nice.
I was thinking trying to avoid an LS and assoc auto swap...... Less fuel!
  • I always liked Discos... until I had one.

I also liked them until I daily drove one, they drive nice, but at those KMs, are due to cook and warp the very skinny heads. Unless there is proof of replacement engine, which seems to be common enough.

    I like it.
Almost as much as it likes fuel 😅

Super smooth, no misfires, vibrations or wobbles & the trans is buttery smooth.
Couple of little trim bits to fix up inside for a rwc.
Might take it in for an alignment as the tyres are still good and near new.

Overall im wrapt. I'll probably put a big trans cooler on it, power steering cooler, twin EL fans to keep the 3.9 happy.

Disks go on tomorrow, then ill have a poke around and find out why the reverse lights arent working, there may not even be bulbs in the holders :astonished:

I went with a set of solid dimpled/slotted RDA disks and a set of Bendix 4x4 pads, the front right seems to have worn faster than the left, so I feel a replacement caliper or rebuild may be a good idea in the future.

On a downside,l I managed to scrape some crud out of the rocker covers, however I must not have got it all as I believe I managed to clog the pickup. I ordered a new 16 bolt sump gasket Sunday arvo and Repco delivered it Monday morning, Hows that for service!

The pan was pretty putrid, I do not have high hopes for the 3.9, although keeping it was never the idea.

For no good reason though, I have no idea what I'd do with one if I owned it.

    We have reverse lights!

Silly pathetic reverse light switch retainer clip on the box had grown weak and wasn't holding the switch all the way in anymore.

Waiting on a rear diff A frame ball joint and some shock bushes, then she should be good to go for rwc.

We are on the lookout for a suitable 300tdi donor car, the V8 is fun and all but 26L/100 is a little bit hard to swallow.

With another workshop being setup in Monbulk, we will have plenty of space for further Disco disasters in the future :D

I would recommend getting on the AULRO train - they have a pretty good forum and a very active fb page. Anything worth knowing can be learnt there - and plenty of sympathy when things go wrong too...

Needed some moving equipment up at the farm, so we found ourselves a Lamborghini for a very reasonable price.

On the lookout for a good auto TDI roller, when the 3 phase gets hooked up (Or we source a VFD) for the old Molnar then the Disco Disasters will begin.

Spent both weekends up at the property, convinced that these are probably the best cars ever built after flogging the absolute bejesus out of the TDI for 5 days straight

Need some strut tops for Doris, a swaybar link and a new rear diff A-frame ball-joint for RWC, then its straight onto club reg
