There's a story about this car. My good friend David Smith had one of these when I worked with him at CCR in 1976. I lived in New Jersey and would drive my old Mustang to his house in Long Island. He and I would jump in his P1800S and drive to the Nassau Coliseum. He even let me drive occasionally. When I moved back to Nashville in 1977, I kept a look out for one of these beauties.
Finally, in 1979, with my pay check from the Pan American Games, I bought a blue 1972 P1800E.
But on a road trip in '82 to Florida to catch up to my band (BS&T) I hit a deer coming down I24 from Monteagle. The car sustained major damage to the right front and down the right side of the car. I was able to force the quarter panel away from the tire and continue on. I made it to Miami where I picked up my future wife (Diane Craig) and her son (Joel) who had flown from Australia on an fiancee status visa and finished the tour with the band. We then limped the car back to Nashville in disgrace.
Over the course of the next few years, I took the car off the road and re-built it from the ground up. New oversized pistons, racing cam, racing header, lowered suspension, new interior and re-sprayed in Porcshe red. And what a cracker it was.
Finally got it back on the road in '88, but then we decided to move to Australia. In hindsight, I should have stuck it in a container and shipped it but had concerns about converting to right hand drive. Left it behind with a friend who garaged it for about 6 months but eventually sold it for me. I sure wish I knew who owns it now.
