Hi,
I have a 2001 XC70.
After a long-ish trip last Sunday, as I pulled into my driveway, the check engine light came on and I notice it was idling rough. My Torque app threw up a P0205 code indicating that the injector in the 5th cylinder was faulty.
On Monday, I could not feel the rough idling on the first two short trips, but then, coming home from the mall, it began to really struggle. And the CEL light was flashing when under load on the last uphill before home.
I did notice that when I changed plugs about 2 months ago, the plug cavity in the 5th cylinder was quite oil-y.
When I measured the resistance of each of the injectors, 4 out of 5 were reading 17 ohms, but the 5th injector was reading 74 ohms. Also, when I put a long rod up against injectors, I could clearly hear the clicking of the solenoid on 1 through 4, but 5 was dead quiet.
Today, I went to Pick and Pay and removed the injectors from a V70, brought them home, cleaned them up and replaced the 5th injector with one of these. It measures, 17 ohms, but once installed, the clicking wasn't as strong as the other four.
I then took it out for a test drive, but it still acts as if its only running on 4 cylinders.
Can anybody confirm the part number of a new injector?
The ones I took from the wreck have 2 sets of numbers:
9454555 and
028015746
Or could it be that the 5th spark plug has fouled and is wrecking havoc with the injector?
Thanks for any tips
Al Craig

5th spark plug or coil pack could also be faulty
Did you pull the injectors from a turbo or non turbo v70?
alcraig
I'm not sure, but I think it was a non turbo.
Upon closer inspection of the "new" injector to the one I pulled out, they look nearly identical except for the fact that the "new" injector has two sets of grooves that allow for the retaining strap under the fuel rail to hold the injector. It looks like the injector is not seated all the way into the manifold. I'm now thinking that the O ring is not deep enough in the hole and therefore some air might be leaking past it causing that cylinder to run very lean. I will pull it all off again tomorrow and try using the other groove. Will let you know. Next step will to be to pull the coil pack and plug.
Thanks

Al, if it's an NA injector then don't use it man.
They may look same but flow rate is not. Danger!
Test the coil etc as you say.
alcraig
What do you mean "NA"?
timbo
The ecu has the capability to cut out individual injectors to avoid damaging the cat convertor in the event of a misfire, so you may be barking up the wrong tree. What codes did you read out of the car?
Ex850R
NA Naturally Aspirated as opposed to turbo.
alcraig
From my Torque app, it threw up codes P0205 and P0305.
The resistance of the suspected fault injector read 74 ohms on my multi-meter.

Do the part numbers of the original and replacement injectors match?

The numbers on the original injector and the replacement injector do no match.
I'd post a picture, but I don't know how to do that.
Also, I am looking for the compliance plate that tells me the exact engine number, and according to the manual it should be located on the right side of the engine, but I cannot find it. Could it be hiding under the vanity cover that covers the belt?

That's not a good start. What's the part number of the original injectors?

I've had another play with the original. This time, when I measured the resistance, it shows 16 ohms. I have also touched a 9V battery to the terminals and I can hear it click. I'm thinking maybe there was never anything wrong in the first place. But, while I have it off, I was thinking of spraying some MAF cleaner through it (as I don't have any carb cleaner) Is there a filter basket insid and how does one extract it.

You can get the filter out with a self tapping screw and some pliers but you will need a new filter. They are generic your local Repco should have some.
I wouldn't bother though as it's unlikely your filter basket will be blocked

Is your car turbo? If so, don't drive on the NA injector, it could cause major engine damage.
P0205 suggests an electrical fault, so I'd be visually inspecting the connectors and harness too.

You guys aren't gonna believe this, but I played around with the originally suspect injector. Took a 9V battery to its terminals repeatedly, doused it with MAF cleaner, filled the inlet side with cleaner whilst clicking the 9V battery, and replaced it. While under the hood, I also extracted the 5th coil and plug and gave them a shop rag clean. Ran her around the block a few times and she's running like silk. I can only assume that by simply removing, cleaning and knocking it around a bit whatever was wrong with it was cleared up. Torque shows no fault codes and the CEL is off. For now, PROBLEM RESOLVED. Thanks for all your help. Its funny, but throughout my whole life I have often found that if I take something apart that is presumed to be broken and rebuild without changing a thing it comes back to life. I did it to my mothers toaster when I was 12. Weird huh?

Darn it. Its come back. Today I had to drive from Manly to North Sydney for a meeting. About three quarters of the way, I noticed a couple of rough idles at the stop lights. Then the CEL came on again, the 5th cylinder was not firing and the Torque app threw up the same code as before (P0205). After a 2 hour meeting, I came out to the car and it started fine. Made it all the way to the Spit Bridge when once again, it started playing up.
My next move will to be to swap injectors 4 & 5 and see if the problem follows the injector or if there is something happening with the wiring loom. Is there a multi-pin connector that connects the injector loom to the ECU? Maybe that needs a good clean. Feels like it might be heat related. Any ideas anybody?

Today, I drove to the nearby Woolies and back with no issues. Then later in the day, down to Manly to visit my chiropractor. When I came back out, it failed immediately. BUT, the code read P0204, which now has me convinced it is definitely the injector. Stopped in at my mechanic and he said that high temps will cause the solenoid to go open circuit and the pin remains closed (no fuel being dumped into the cylinder). Put in a call to Jason at Suncoast Volvo and he is posting 2 rebuilt injectors to me. So hopefully they will arrive on Monday and I can finish this off once and for all. Should I be worried about running around on 4 cylinders over the week end? Gotta go to the SCG tomorrow.

A Noid light is a handy tool to check the wiring of a injector to see if it is pulsing (getting a signal to turn on and off). It happens to fast for a multi Meyer or test light. Repco sell them or Google Noid light simple and handy tool

Good news. Last week I received a new (used) injector from Suncoast Volvo. I then removed all 5 of the injectors, tossed the faulty one and set about cleaning the rest of them. I used a syringe that fit over the O rings, attached the red tube from a can of spray carby cleaner, applied a 9 volt battery to the terminals (to open the solenoid) and srayed them out until the appeared to be flowing evenly. Reassembled everything and it all seems to be good now. No CEL and no fault codes. Hurray.
