XC90 for $10k?

Some friends are after a 7 seater and they're interested in the XC90. They've been looking at a few under $10k with around 160-200,000km on them. Anyone here have experience with these? Are they best avoided or can they be a good buy?

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Not a cheap age to be getting a second hand luxury car. Could be good buys around still though. @jonbot can probably help with year type specifics.
  • Avoid the T6 at all costs
The NA 6 is slow as ****
    The D5 is the awesomes

Usual volvo stuff... Upper spring seats flog out as well as bushings all over the place
Parts are exxy for a lot of things but dont fail that often overall
Sunroof clogs and 25L of water sloshes around in the front foot wells molding away
CV's just cause of number of KM
AWD == just make it FWD and remove the tailshaft and enjoy for a very long time
  • hmmm

T6 has the 4T65 GM gearbox, not all that long lived though the software update did make it last reasonably well, makes the car drive like crap

2.5T has the AW50-55 auto, no race car but the extra gear (5 vs the T6 and its 4 speeds) makes a difference
no slower than the T6 in the real world, slightly better fuel economy though (11-12l/100 vs like 13-14)

the D5's generally start at nearer 20k, worth it though, decent economy (~10 city and like 7-8 highway)

3.2 n/a 6 is just slow as balls

the V8 is probably the pick of youre not too worried about economy, same econ as the 3.2 but actually moves under its own power

the D5, 3.2 and V8 use the TF80SC 6 speed auto which is more or less bulletproof, no AWD issues unless you thrash it in the snow every year

strut tops tear out every 150-200k or so, control arm bushes dont really fail in the XC90's, the smaller P2 platform stuff have smaller bushes and do tear out every so often

dont make an XC90 FWD, torque steer is fucken horrid

I have driven several Manual FWD T5 XC90's
    Its not that bad...
You just need to hold firmly as you slip her in and say the other cars name, then hold on for the ride
  • 2.5T wouldnt be too bad if you know about it

a D5 with a dead DEM pressure sensor is WTF
  • Yes definitely avoid the T6 at all costs or prepare to fork out another 8k+ for a new transmission.
  • Theyre easily rebuildable, similar to the 4l60

Up to date TCM software and they dont seem to break

Still a crap gearbox though, super loose convertor and only 4 speed

The engine needs less miniature hairdryer as well
  • Thanks, this helps a lot.

XC90 s have a really bad reputation for bad gearboxes, either loosing drive or, gear slipping

no, the T6 auto goes bang and the 2.5T looses the angle gear drive collar from time to time

3.2, D5 and V8 have the TF80SC 6 speed and therefor no issues
  • SpacSpac (@Spac) Canberra-ish.
Mehmet has/had one on epay with a crook auto for $2900. 2.5T, I think.

If I had a lot more fucks to give (ie: even one), I'd have sussed it out.
