240 Steering wheel

Have 93 wagon with air bag steering wheel. Anyone know if any later wheels fit?

  • Are you wanting to get rid of the airbag, or replace it with a later-model airbag wheel? The former is do-able but the latter would be unlikely as most airbags are specific for the car (tailored response and size to suit the vehicle’s geometry and crash deceleration pulse). If you want to put a non-airbag wheel on, you have to modify a few things. I can provide more details if desired. Lemme know.

Not sure how they would know at least for a 240 since some had it and some didn’t...however I would not remove an airbag just for the sake of it, especially on a newer car that’s designed for an airbag.

OK just trying to get my head around this. Are you dissatisfied in some way with the current airbag steering wheel or is it defective? If defective I have a couple good 93 240 airbag steering wheels. If you just want something that looks different but still will have a functional airbag I think you’re probably out of luck. There may be some later Volvos that have the same spline pattern but the airbag contacts and geometry of the wheel are unlikely to match that of the 240 steering wheel. And you’d be playing with an explosive device that may not function as intended...
  • OK point taken. That's what I wanted to know. the standard wheel is naff but I am stuck with it!

Yep, unfortunately that's a problem with airbag wheels...Volvo probably states in the owner's manual that the airbags are only good for 10 years or something...given how old the cars are, unless you really want to keep the old airbag, you could possibly put a non-airbag wheel on the car. Of course it could be a legal issue, but since the 240 was available without the airbag and I don't think they changed anything between airbag and non-airbag cars for AUS, you could just get rid of it. If you were to do that, you'd need to swap out the cast metal bracket on the end of the steering column that the stalks bolt to as the horn ring setup is different on airbag vs non-airbag cars. Then you can fit an aftermarket wheel using a Volvo 240-specific steering wheel boss such as the Momo 9010.
