It replaces the dual pump setup with a single very high quality pump
Rust wise... Still researching for you... but a spare tank is probably the cheapest option

Best I have so far is $250 via Gumtree, but a new tank is not much more than that shipped from the US

I think the tank is mostly okay. Pickup tube is the biggest issue. Also have a new filter on the way.

There's no varnish any more, I mean there might be trace amounts, but the issue was the loose rust and sediment. I'll pull the injectors and flush them backwards when I get a chance.

FWIW I replaced the dual pump setup in the 245 with a single DW200 pump. Fits nice and seems to keep up with the turbo engine fine. Was also reasonably priced and I bought mine locally.

Then I plumbed it into a Nissan Patrol fuel filter and mounted it on the tank. Seems to work fine and is really simple.

That filter idea is really nice. I could delete the entire main pump/filter bracket and run a new hardline to the firewall. I do wonder if this Goss pump I bought could handle it. It's an OE replacement for lots of larger engines than a red block, but there's no specs anywhere. I emailed Goss for more info.

I think I have a photo somewhere in my thread. Filter cost something like $25 from supercheap and is designed to feed a 4.2 litre Patrol motor so should be fine feeding a 2.3 redblock.

I suppose you could make up some brackets to mount it to the stock location, but the shape. Of the OE tank is weird, a regular rectangular tank wouldn't be suitable.

In any case this is way overthinking the solution.

Por15 make a fuel tank sealer/restoration kit that includes:
Tank cleaner
rust remover
sealer
I have not personally used this kit, but have seen it in numerous VW builds.

Still smaller then the 10mm banjo feed of the stock unit. I'd go for something with a 10mm line on a turbo car that will be used for something other then cruising.

Moved the wagon, finally, from @Philia_Bear's yard to my place in Eastwood. The fuel line celebrated by rupturing near the tank fitting. We triaged it and had BBQ duck for dinner so all in all a good night. Thanks to @Dauntless also who happened to be there and gave us a hand loading and unloading the wagon.
